[solved] TPMS confused?

I bought a new set of 20" original LR wheels with tpms sensors. I don't have a spare tire fitted in the car, but the system keeps prompting to check the tire pressure for the spare tire.
Do I need to reset the car ? ie disconnect battery? Or do the sensors need to be programmed differently as they may came of a car with a spare tire

No they should detect the new wheels without any mods. I have two sets of wheels, 20's and 19's and had sensors fitted to the 19's, they worked fine without any reprogramming. However, I was getting warnings on the original 20's and when the car went in for it's first service Lookers said there was a Technical Service Bulletin about "false" alarms from TPMS and a software upgrade - would you know if your car has ahd the upgrade Rein?

Last time it was in (before new wheels) they said they applied all available updates, but maybe they figured with some updates: if it ain't broke...

Strange thing is, with my original wheels that came with the car, it never asked for the spare tire. Now with the new set it does...

What happens if you put wheels on without any TPMS sensors?

For example must winter tyre wheels have the sensors?

I ran a set of wheels without TPMS. The car responds with a "tire pressure monitoring not available" message. Also it never bothered me about the spare tire

No requirement yet in the UK to have TPMS but it is coming in either in either 2014 or 2015 for all new cars
to have some form. The Evoque system is very basic, just telling you a tyre is loosing pressure, not what the pressure is. The sensors are very expensive too and despite what LR tells you you can fit them to any size wheel that can fit an Evoque, it's just that they will only fit them to certain sizes/designs from the factory. My Style 3's
have sensors in them, bought from the dealership but put into the rims by the tyre fitters who took off the OEM tyres and fitted my winter tyres. I had it as an option on the Fuji white Evqoue and have specced it again for the new car.

Can anyone justify the point of TPMS for a car that does not have runflats?

My last 2 (mini and bmw) both had runflats hence TPMS and I can see the value there as you cannot really tell when you have lost pressure in a tyre (I got a flat and could not tell the difference in basic driving if it wasn't for the warning).

Surely with non RFTs the TPMS value goes down a lot as you can normally tell when you have had an incident which causes a deflation.

Or, am I missing something?

To a point, yes, but I've had slow leaks that trigger a TPMS well before I'd have noticed it otherwise, and also I've had the changing weather get cold to the point where TPMS triggers. If I recall correctly, the TPMS on my RAV4 triggers when it is 10% PSI below spec, but it is a dumb TPMS system which only gives you a warning but not which tire(s) are causing it!

Any info on the "phantom spare tire" message, guys?

I don't have TPMS but I wonder if when you first drive the car after changing wheels it's picked up one of the "other" wheels as a spare. If that was the case I guess it should stop asking once you restart and drive the car away from home. Does it show a warning everytime you use the car?

Also I wonder if one of your sensors is not working thus making the system think a wheel is missing?

If the vehicle has TPMS but the winter use
wheels and tyres are fitted with standard
rubber valves, the TPM system will search for
a signal. When it finds no response, TYRE
PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM
UNAVAILABLE will be displayed in the
message centre.
When the original wheels are refitted, the
vehicle will need to travel a short distance
before the TPM system recognises the wheel
sensors. At that point, TYRE PRESSURE
MONITORING SYSTEM AVAILABLE will be
displayed.

TPMS INFLATION PRESSURE
COMPENSATION
If your vehicle is fitted with 18, 19 or 20 inch
wheels with TPMS, they can be replaced with
17 inch wheels with TPMS, so enabling the use
of snow chains or traction devices.
Tyre pressures of vehicles fitted with 17 inch
wheels with TPMS as standard are not affected.
Tyre pressures for other wheel sizes should be
adjusted as shown in the table.

Tyre pressure monitoring system

If a non TMP system temporary spare wheel is
fitted, the system will automatically recognise
the change in wheel positions. After
approximately 10 minutes of driving above
25km/h (18mph), the message FRONT (REAR)
RIGHT(LEFT) TYRE PRESSURE NOT
MONITORED will be displayed, accompanied
by illumination of the warning lamp.
The warning lamp will first flash and then
illuminate continuously. Extended use of the
temporary spare wheel will trigger the message
TYRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM
FAULT.
This TPM system display sequence will be
activated at every ignition cycle, until the
temporary spare wheel is replaced by a full size
TPM system road wheel.
Note: If in use, always replace the temporary
spare wheel before having a TPM system fault
investigated.
If any message fails to clear after rectifying the
fault, consult your Dealer/ Authorised Repairer.
TYRE CHANGE
Valve stem seal, washer, nut, valve core
and cap should be replaced at every tyre
change. Valve stem seal, washer and
nut must be replaced if valve retention
nut is loosened. Sensor units and nuts
must be refitted using correct torque
figures and associated profile. Damage
to the vehicle may result if these
precautions are not taken.
Any tyre changes must be carried out by a
qualified technician. Great care must be taken
during removal and refitting of tyres to avoid
damaging the sensor.
REPLACEMENT SENSOR
Should the sensor require replacing, it should
be carried out by a Dealer/Authorised Repairer.
A replacement sensor must be fitted to a
running wheel in order to be recognised by the
system. The vehicle needs to be stationary for
15 minutes during the sensor fitment before
the system is ready to detect the new sensor.
The vehicle must be driven for a minimum of
fifteen minutes after the sensor change, and
then remain stationary for fifteen minutes to
activate full TPM system operation.
If the TPM system warning for any wheel does
not clear, even after ensuring correct inflation
and driving for more than ten minutes above
25 km/h (18 mph), you should seek qualified
assistance as soon as possible.
