Top Up Oil

Did anyone get any top-up oil when they collected their car ?, i popped into a large LR dealer i was passing today to get some just in-case. However, the parts guy had no idea which oil was needed, he came back with totally the wrong grade and spec of oil and said it was correct !!, luckily i had read the service book and knew what was needed, but if i hadn't and just trusted his first guess it could have been potentially damaging !. Its a real worry when the dealers don't know which oil to use !!!. According to the specs the diesel engines are specced with a low 'sooting' formula. Castril SLX powerflow C3 or eq. (5w-30).

Good question - anyone had to top up yet? My BMW used to drink a litre every 6 months and that was the expected behaviour.

My Merc also uses a non sooting Mobil version.

A bigger concern is what do they do/use when they service it?

The reason for non-sooting oil is the DPF.
Due to the excessive price that LR dealer's now charge for oil that they claim is delivered from 1 & 5l canisters (but I have seen the bulk oil tanker delivering!) I now supply my own oil brought for a lot less from Halfrauds that I know meets the spec. The local dealer always leaves a top-up kit containing 1ltr of Castrol oil and latex gloves, paper towel and a hand cleaner wipe in a package in the car after the service and this has always been the right spec oil for the car - don't see why they won't continue to do the same.

There are other manufactures that meet the spec:

Mobil Super 3000 Formula C1 is recommended by ExxonMobil for applications requiring Ford WSS-M2C934-B which includes Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles from January 2009 fitted with the 3.0 Litre V6 Diesel engine, and Mazda Diesel engines fitted with Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) from 2005

As Evo-King said it has to be low SAPS (sulphated ash and phosphorous) for DPF

Land Rover now recommend Castrol Edge Professional C1 oil for diesel engines fitted with DPF. Any oil meeting ACEA C1 is acceptable.

I've heard some horror stories about LR dealers using the wrong oils and one friend actually took his own oil in for a service only to find they left it in the boot and filled the engine up with... the wrong oil!!!

WB I always tell the receptionist and leave the oil in the passenger footwell - the balance of the oil has always been left there for me in the canister on completion of the service.

i always did that in germany, but will do now here as they charge £15 a litre for the specced oil!!
