In the USA and far east they tint the windscreen too with no
Problems just like wearing dark glasses. Nanny state we are in!!

Without having a full on debate on it i personally dont see why they made it ilegal to have light tints on the front. I was pulled uplast year towing a trailer and the police lady who stopped me came up to my car with the darkest sun glasses on you can get to speak with me.
Surley i could see far more out of a lightly tinted front "side" car window than she could with her very dark almost black sun glasses on, yet glasses are not ilegal to wear which i think is wrong
At least i can see clearly through clear glass when driving forward without glasses on, yet she is driving always with smoked vision from the glasses she has on and i think its wrong.

Sorry to point out the obvious flaw in your logic but were her sunglasses stuck to her face meaning she had dangerous visibility at dusk or at night?

Not being a busybody, just pointing out the police are shit hot on this at the moment and going out of their way to prosecute offenders.

The problem with side front tints is for other drivers/road users, particularly those on 2 wheels.
I hated it when on my motorbike if you couldn't see the driver to make eye contact when approaching a T junction where you had right of way.

It's like driving at night (i.e.more dangerous) and yes I know some motocyclists are just as bad with their visor tints.

Also doesn't provide a hiding place for idiots on their phones.

In Abu Dhabi a colleague of mine has all the windows of his RRS fitted with tinted film that has a mirror finish on the outside, but driving with him at night is not a pleasant experience, saving grace is that just about everywhere you drive in UAE at night has street lighting, but in the full dark of night it isn't nice.

Is it really completely illegal to even add the slightest tint to the front sides? Just be nice to reduce the dramatic contrast between the rear sides and front sides a little! Is a bit jarring at the moment though I'm slowly getting used to the idea as nearly every car out there is in the same boat (especially SUVs and Exec cars).

What would be the consequences if you were caught or heaven forbid were in an accident? Could they take away your licence or even consider a sentance wcs if you caused an accident?

I'm just trying to weigh up whether it's worth it!

No in the UK it is not illegal to tint the front side glasses, BUT the tint you can have is very light, there must still be 75% of ambient light transmitted through the window. If you look on the Pentagon website it tells you the regulations for front side glass.

And you would void your insurance so would risk losing everything if you injured someone.

I have just looked at the Pentagon website and they now state "it is illegal to tint front side windows" HOWEVER, my sister has tinted from side glass that was one her "approved used" Range Rover Sport when she bought it. Before delivery she asked the local police for advice because she was under the impression that it was illegal. Plod took their light meter to the garage and checked out the car and she now has a letter from them stating that the glass has been checked and is in compliance with the law. As far as I know she has never had any problem since and no problems with her insurance.

i have a 9 month old baby.

is the privacy glass sufficient that if i get it then i won't need those awful things i presently stick to the inside of the window to shield her from the sun?
