Bad start to a great off road day today..................... managed to reverse end on into a safety barrier. Can confirm that the tailgate is plastic and in today's lowish temperature today it broke.......... even the inside is broken, thank fully not the tailgate glass or the rear bumper. The bit I got was the tube end sticking out into space.

Car is in Lookers Park Royal from Tuesday so I hope that they can fit a new one.........

Now for some happier photos of the day:

The bit I reversed into is in this photo taken at last year's run to the same place - the hand rail I clouted is the bit just to the left of the red Defender
in the photo. Just don't know how I managed it

Ouch
Spot of Gloss white dulux and some black gloss on the trim and nobody will notice the repair!

That's a bloody nuisance, but I hope that it didn't spoil your day out too much.

Amazing that such a small impact area can cause such extensive damage. Is there any way that it's repairable, rather than having a new tailgate? Doubt the inner bit can be repaired though.

Let us know how you get on next week.
Rotten luck Tim. Hope you can get it replaced ASAP.
My heart feels for you on that one. Fingers crossed for the repairs and all the associated aggro that will go with it.

Close attention to ensure they rehang the tailgate correctly. As a number us have noted, tailgate alignment can be a bit of an issue.

I always think ownership becomes less stressful once you get over the first ding!

You might think about a temporary amendment to your signature for the next few days?
If it is any consolation, I'm very pleased that you took the RRE out of the concrete jungle and do some actual off road stuff. Nice scenery.

Now it looks like a 1990's Mondeo. Seriously annoying....
Yup, you killed it. But look at it this way... In college we had an end of year party where everyone got wasted and my best pal heaved a shopping cart out of our third story apartment and it landed on his Harley putting a special dent in the tank. Which he never repaired because it would always remind him of the great blast we had that night.
Or every stains a memory! Least if it localised to the tailgate no fears of an awkward repair, just replace and job done, looks like a great day!
