White vs. Grey in daylight

I have to say Sassy that I think you are totally wrong (not surprising really considering what I've ordered ). I may have agreed with you around 10 to 15 years ago, when, yes, it probably was considered 'naff' to have a white car, consequently it became very difficult to sell a car in that colour (at least in the UK). Things have moved on though, and to me white just suits the lines of a modern car design. There are many new car's on the road that look great it white, but that you would hardly give a second glance to in any other colour (the Scirroco for one, as SW6RR has mentioned). While I think the Evoque design is strong enough to look good in any colour, I believe that's especially so in white, and yes, it will be the most popular colour for the Evoque, but why that should make it 'naff' is totally beyond me. Then again I could go for the safe/boring option and change my order to Silver or Grey and at least I would be able to take it off road.

Seriously though, I find all these discussions regarding 'what colour looks best' to be totally irrelevant. It's fair enough for people to give their opinions, it's what the forum is about after all, but when it degenerates into a 'this is the best colour because that's what I've ordered' type of argument, it's just absolutely pointless. Colour, along with a lot of the other options are obviously down to personal choice. We are all spending a significant amount of money on our cars, and I'm sure that non of us have selected any of our options lightly. I for one have had sleepless nights (really!) debating what I should and should not specify, when people then post opinions stating that these choices are wrong, then fine, no problem, as long as it's based on anything factual, but just rubbishing them because it's not what they like, is not helpful, just irritating!

The biggest difference you will notice between White and Grey is the white enhances the shut lines of bonnets and every other panel.
The shape and lines of the car are only enhanced by the reflective properties of the clear coat of laquer. Black for instance when highly polished reflects very well but you lose the panel shapes in the black so to speak. The Fuji White is NOT FLAT it still has a clear coat laquer, but has no metalic particals to help reflection, so the clear coat needs to be highly polished to help reflect the light.
See picture below- Note I also have a grey quattro so not biased in any way just pointing out color is subjective and has different reflective properties.
So to recap if a dirty White Evoque will look naff , a dirty Grey Evoque (you won't notice the dirt so much) wil still look naff.IMHO.

Thanks Quattroman - as everyone here knows, I'm a big fan of white Scirrocos - that's a beauty you've got there.

You're right about the shut lines - very good point, never really thought of it from that perspective before.

Our of interest are you swaping the Rocco for the Evoque?

We are considering something similar but with our Golf GTi, also in white!

Looks to me like the the official evoque picture of the red model with a little photoshop touch up with grey....... Check out the wheel arches !

Having now seen most of the colours in the flesh, I feel that the best/nicest colour on the Evoque is Orkney.

The Firenze red is a LOT nicer in the flesh. Very deep and sparkly with a real raspberry glow. Looked great on a Dynamic with black roof.

Third nicest I'm going Indus (which is a relief as my car's order is locked now).

Then the rest. Didn't get a chance to see sand or the lime green. Still not drawn to the white I'm afraid. I agree there are some cars that look banging in white. I do feel (IMO!) that white looks unfinished and flat on LR and in the Evoque it's just blah. Evoque needs depth to match it's stealth shape and menacing stance. If I could I would 100% switch to Orkney. But stuck with light colour now.

No fear of not being noticed in the Orkney Grey if my drive yesterday was anything to go by. In Comrie village a guy on a motorbike nearly came a cropper craning his neck as he drove passed me waiting to pull out of a junction while he tried to figure out what he had just seen! Even though LR had been at Gleneagles for 2 days and the cars had been around the test circuit several times even the dull and boring black Evoques got people looking at them trying to figure out what it was. Even travelling 4 Evoques in a convoy (One Orkney, 2 Black and one Indus) we nearly caused accidents as people suddenly realise what they were looking at. The LR guys warned us that the car would have this effect on the general public - they claimed it was worse on the motorway when folks would overtake, realise what they were overtaking, pull in in front then slow down so the LR drivers had to pull out to overtake while the other driver took photos or video as they went passed.

BTW Orkney with the black contrast roof and the panoramic roof looks fantastic - but still not so "iconic" as the Fuji............
