RE: Thoughts on new 9 speed gearbox?

The 2.0 turbo petrol engine in my evoque is the exact same engine as i had in my old ford focus ST3 but the gearbox is different as i have the new 9 speed auto in the evoque and a 6 speed manual in the focus.

When i plant my foot to the ground in the Evoque from a standing still speed there is a very minimal hesitance then all of a sudden am rocketing through the gears and reaching 60, the same again when overtaking its is very quick through the gears.

Now in the focus once again same engine i felt it was very slow and sluggish and didnt feel much of a "Hot Hatch" the performance in the Evoque which is the same BHP as the focus is much better and i would put this down to the gearbox, as the Evoque is my first auto i cant compare it to other auto car's but when it comes to comparing it to another car with the actual same engine there is only one winner and thats the Evoque.

Your ST Focus also wasn't 4WD but Front wheel drive - 2 additional wheels on the Evoque to get the power down even if the Evoque doesn't have the fancy front diff of the Focus.

A Pangea Green New Defender 110 First Edition is now sitting on my drive alongside British Racing Green Electric Mini Cooper SE Level 3. After 21 years in my hands my TDI300 90 was handed on to the next custodian on 15 July 2022.

RE: Thoughts on new 9 speed gearbox?

I can understand having a 4WD making a difference but the acceleration from a higher speed say 50mph when overtaking is more responsive in the Evoque, my previous car to the focus had the same power but with no fancy diff and it was better through the gears than the focus.
When comparing the power between the two car's the Evoque's 9 speed gearbox seems to get more out the engine than what i experienced with the focus .

I bet your Focus also couldn't do this...................... it's a little out of focus (excuse the pun!) but it reads 87.2mpg

Note the timings! All taken after pulling to the road side with the engine idling then eco-stopped after coming down a 60% decline in D with no foot on the throttle.............. Cool
