Spam / strange usernames / strange posts

There has been a large number of spam, dodgy posts, dodgy users Mae / setup recently and the moderators have tried to act s swiftly as possible to minimise the nuisance. Part of this has been to ban a large number of recently set up accounts that appear to contain strange information. Obviously we hope that we have not banned any legitimate users as part of this process but if we have then please accept our apologies.

It all seemed bizarre and obvious at the same time, you might want to tidy up some of our comments on the Production Problems thread, as they were relevant whilst the spam was there, but looks odd now.

Done - there were about another 50 accounts created that didn't make any actual posts but linked to porn sites, have HTML/java etc in their information details so we've had to deal with all those too but I fear there are more that will need barring.

I've got the same issue on my forum, whats more annoying is that the they can get past the 'recaptcha' now.
Which I hate with a passion anyway, but moreso now we have had to increase it's complexity.

Until recently we haven't had to deal with too much but the last few days its been happening a lot. If you click on the membership list and sort by when people join there are a lot of people registered who never activate their accounts and some very strange user names.

Was the same with my site Tim, all of a sudden we were flooded with spam registrations - and just like you've done here, I had to put out a 'sorry if I deleted you' message.
So far, the increased complexity of the captcha has kerbed the registrations for now.
