Satnav Updates

Hi from a newbie and a question I would imagine has been asked before but I can't find an answer.

How does the built in satnav get updated? Is it something I have to do myself, a dealer fix at service or does it just come through the ether?

Hi Essgeebee... as far as I'm aware there is no way of updating you need to buy a new update version from LR and they cost quite a bit .....

All the dealerships that I have used for servicing my cars have carried out satnav updates for free while doing all the other electronic updates at a standard service, but I appreciate that not all dealers do this. You should ask your servicing dealer what their policy is, it should be free but many use it as an additional "profit centre"

Really? So they only need to sell one memory stick and everything else they sell is pure profit.................. glad that I have decent dealerships servicing my cars!

I just inquired about an update and was told it will cost me £170 plus VAT.

I recently drove around Galway, Republic of Ireland and found that I was being told by SatNav to take the 1st or 2nd exit when at junctions and not roundabouts. These Junctions have been in use for much longer than I have had my car therefore the SatNav data is well out of date.

I've had the car 3 years and barely use the SatNav as where I live (Northern Ireland) doesn't really warrant the use
of SatNav as it is such a small Country to live in and a quick look at google maps gets you to your location.

If anything, Land Rover should provide updates free of charge for the first 3 years or when under warranty.

They know where they can stick their updates!

I just purchased the US map update for my 2012 as there are a number of roads that are new that affect the routing considerably in my area. So the map is marketed as the 2016 update. On the packing note description it has (14Q3) - which I would take to probably mean the maps are from 2014, 3rd quarter? The files on the SD card are all dated January 2015.

I get that LR wants to make $$ out the maps. But when I can get map data 4 times a year from Garmin for a fraction of the price, I annoys me that the product they are selling is essentially a year out of date at least, and marketed as being for 2016. And purchasing a 3rd party GPS isn't as option as they don't work with the heated screen.

If you are going to charge a premium price for the product, have the decency to provide a premium product, especially when numerous other manufacturers who also use HERE maps (Nokia) have taken to providing the updates for free for many models.

I believe that the latest nav systems coming in new JLR products use an SD or micro SD card for mapping data so that should make updating much easier and hopefully much cheaper.

I'm touched by your belief Tim but I think you'll find that the updates (whether for SD cards or HDD Navs )will be about the same price. It's the data they are charging for.
I also understand that the mapping data (Navteq based) is the same for both systems.
Regarding the OP query I think I read somewhere that the Navteq update did originate from late 2014 and was first released just after - perhaps early 2015? He's right about the rip-off prices they are just taking advantage of ppl with built-in systems and the fact that we don't want Tom-toms stuck on our dash with Blu-tack.
