RE: Putting some numbers on things

Anyone else looked up 3rd order polynominal fit on wiki and now has a sore head?

Apparently
Let's start with a first degree polynomial equation:

y = ax + b

This is a line with slope a. We know that a line will connect any two points. So, a first degree polynomial equation is an exact fit through any two points with distinct x coordinates.

If we increase the order of the equation to a second degree polynomial, we get:

y = ax^2 + bx + c

This will exactly fit a simple curve to three points.

If we increase the order of the equation to a third degree polynomial, we get:

y = ax^3 + bx^2 + cx + d

Obvious really Confused??:

So why hasn't philskill used a 4th polynomial fit? Slacker.

Because he is only plotting three variables ?

Just a guess as I really haven't the foggiest idea.

You know girls, you havent experienced anything till you've had it fitting perfectly to the 3rd order! Wink Laughing

4th order would probably loop back on itself, and form a threatening looking noose.

RE: Putting some numbers on things

A few years ago I left somebody's new BMW 5 series Touring and Jaguar X type at the bottom of the South Indian Ocean somewhere about half way between Durban and Fremantle and down at 55 South when 25 containers decided to leap off the ship in bad weather.................. LR uses dedicated car carriers rather than containerships so your car is more likely to travel to Aus via either the Suez Canal and Singapore or Baltimore and the Panama Canal, the risk of bad weather in the South Indian Ocean causing damage due to cars breaking loose in the heavy rolling that happens down there is too great for car carriers to venture that far south

A Pangea Green New Defender 110 First Edition is now sitting on my drive alongside British Racing Green Electric Mini Cooper SE Level 3. After 21 years in my hands my TDI300 90 was handed on to the next custodian on 15 July 2022.
