Luggage Rails, Rubber Boot Mat, Bumper Protector

This is hardly rocket science, but here is how I have kitted out the luggage space of my Evoque which has factory fit luggage rails. I want to be able to tie things down using the moveable eyes while protecting the floor; I also want to protect the bumper when I use it as a foot rest to tie up my walking boots and also provide somewhere clean to sit on when I'm having a cup of coffee.

First, the rubber mat does not work directly with the luggage rails. You can see that the mat covers the rails which prevents the eyes sliding and the cut outs are not in any case big enough for the adjustable eyes.





The solution is simply to cut off the side parts along the groove provided as a guide. Use a Stanley knife with a fresh blade and a straight edge to provide extra guidance. I used a long spirit level. When back in the car, the top of the rubber mat is flush with the rails and the semi-rigid protector can be placed on top if required.



Next, I bought a fold out bumper protector from a company called Boot Buddy, about £23 including postage. This is a heavy duty plastic sheet with rounded front corners and velcro stitched along its width at the back. It's designed for their own boot liner and is fractionally wider than the rubber mat, shown here with the right edge aligned and the extra on the left as shown, about 5cm.



No problem; fold it in two to give the correct total width, tape down and use the folded-over edge as a guide for cutting. It's then attached to the underside of the rubber mat using a velcro strip stuck across its width.



I can then fold it out to protect the bumper when loading or putting on my walking boots and there's a clean surface to sit on at coffee time. It folds up easily and can be removed if it gets in the way or tucked between the mat and the semi-rigid protector. It doesn't interfere with the electric tail-gate operation.

It's officially called the "Rigid Loadspace Protector", VPLVS0089.

I originally wanted Social Seating but not sure what to do now as the above is going to be more practical with the dogs.
