Evoque v Merc v Q5

What an excellent reply, very informative to those that are unaware of these tyres and these wonderful 4x4's.

Come on Spiderman,you can't tell us half a story! You're not an F1 driver or the new Stig are you?

Recently I was told that a FWD with winter tires is superior to a 4WD with all seasons in the snow. Other than the clearance issue, I believe this to be true. Logical really. I will be getting winter tires and can't wait to go play I'm the white stuff!

Ohhhh, thought of a question! The Evoque is AWD isn't it? It just activates the other wheels when slippage is sensed, so not like true constant 4WD like a Subaru. I wonder if AWD is slightly inferior to 4WD then in the snow, or about the same? I know I could look these things up but like to chat

permanent 4wd i believe.

it is.....permanent 4wd...not awd...

No Evoque is permanent 4WD but 95% of the drive goes to the front in normal driving and 5% to the rear, until slippage is detected when the VCU sends drive where ever there is grip, up to 5% front and 95% rear, traction control, ABS and DSC then all act together to decide which wheels to brake to stop power being sent to wheels with no traction. If you are really unlucky then it is possible for all the drive to go to one wheel if that is the one with grip and all the others have lost traction. It's one of the clever things that the modern Land Rovers can do that the oldies cannot and there is nothing like seeing the looks on the diehard's faces when a Freelander1 doesn't get stuck when all the 90's and 110's are up to the waist line with mud flying everywhere.

There's an interesting comparative review of different makes of winter tyres against a reference summer tyre in this month's EVO magazine. They were not testing the size of the Evoque tyres but the Continental comes out best.

Ask - and you shall be enlightened! So I did and I was! Thanks - now I know the Evoque is 4WD, and we might have a Stig in our midst
