Looks as though the ecu will need to be opened to map it. Which may open a can of worms with regards to warranties.

From speaking to superchips today, they seem to think that it maybe hard to improve on the SD4 .

So in theory if the engines are identical as per the linked article , if you map both a TD4 & an SD4 the end result will be the same figure.

I really need to check if the right side tail pipe is functional or just for show.

I am thinking of just fitting my tuneit box till something better comes along

So the SD4 is not worth spending the extra £1,000 on? I should keep with TD4 & get it tweaked to perform as the SD4 does correct?

I have to admit that I do not understand this…. so to save £1,000 one has to spend £500 on some box of some sort (Tunit etc.) and then probable spend some more money to have it installed.

You then have the inconvenience of removing it every time the car goes in for a service (else the warranty is gone) or even worse, if the car break down under warranty, fiddle next to side of the road to have the thing removed before the car is picked up for repairs by LR.

Then of course this all assumes it works and you do in fact get the same performance (without having to spend extra money on the exhausts etc.).

All this to come resale time still have to sell a TD4 with a lower book value.

So a little confused by all this - if you want the SD4 just buy the SD4.

RE: Engine question ... Td4 sd4

hopefully superchips will develop a bluefin unit. easy peasy to install, remove for service and reinstall yourself, they cost about £400 for other cars so i would imagine an evoque would be the same

They do it for the freelander td4 and claim an extra 33hp and 84nm so i see no reason why not the evoque

RE: Engine question ... Td4 sd4

Alot of people will start to ask the same question.

If they are running the car for company use there is a difference.

But not that much between td4 & sd4 , it only £10 month extra in company car tax which is bugger all .

But the difference between the ed4 & sd4 is about £40 p month extra which work out to be £1500 more over 3 years in bik tax. Still no great shakes

But if your company car policy is an car below 140g/km emissions, it takes the sd4 out of reach which is a shame.

But some people may be faced with a policy like this, hence tuning is the way forward

RE: Engine question ... Td4 sd4

Fitting of the boxes couldn't be easier, I have one on my Octavia VRS, the difference is considerable, fitting\unfitting isn't an issue, 2 minute job, literally 2 connectors, MPG is also improved, so on an eD4 I might be lucky enough to see 60mpg on run - in a range rover that'll be an achievement.

No I won't have the extra driven wheels but I plan to put winter tyres on the 18's and get 19's or 20's for the other 11 months of the year

RE: Engine question ... Td4 sd4

So I still need people's opinions I can stretch another 1k if needed (just) but would it be money well spent upgrading to the SD4? I have to have manual due to tax reasons on the lower emissions of the manual.

I am currently driving a civic 2.2l which I think is 8.9 sec to 60 which matches the manual SD4 whereas the TD4 is about 10.5 sec to 60.

I also plan to keep it for 3 years so need to consider resale value so would the SD4 be more desirable in the used Market? & how much more would a SD4 be worth in the used Market? As if it's £500-£750 more then it's worth the £1000 outlay.

How do the used freelanders compare TD4 v SD4?

RE: Engine question ... Td4 sd4

I think if I had the choice I would pick sd4, although I will be ordering ed4 for emissions reasons.

I have seen a video of the 2wd freelander off road & I was very impressed.

I also use winter Tyres on my cars

So using the basic theory of a 2wd car fitted with winter Tyres is more effective in snow than a 4wd car on summer Tyres.

My mind is made up

RE: Engine question ... Td4 sd4

The ed4 tested by one of the UK magazines faired so well off-road that they questioned whether or not 4WD was really necessary for the Evoque. Same for the 2WD version of the Freelander.

A Pangea Green New Defender 110 First Edition is now sitting on my drive alongside British Racing Green Electric Mini Cooper SE Level 3. After 21 years in my hands my TDI300 90 was handed on to the next custodian on 15 July 2022.
