It's crazy that our cars can't do this from factory. My father in laws Ford Edge does. Seems like a stupid omission

it's more likely a safety/legal concern than a mistaken omission.

Same goes for using the key fob to close windows, but you can open them. At least in VWs you can change that via the VAGCOM.
