Corroded and pitted front and rear discs?!! - Please Help

Hi,

My 2016 Evoque HSE is 2016 (bought on PCP from new Dec 2016) and has done 29,383k miles total.
It was last serviced 7 months ago (at 19,215 miles) and advised the discs were all good and pads were 20% worn.
I have since then done another 10k miles.

I had problems with the rear camera, wing mirrows, parking sensors and air vents so LR collected to fix under warranty.

However!

The dealer in Hereford called me to advise after a 'complimentary check' that my front pads are 70%-75% worn and rear 85%-90% worn and that all the discs badly corroded (surface and pitted) and needed to be replaced immediatly at a cost of £1k!!! and classed as a red flag/dangerous.

I could not believe this and said all was good 7 months ago?? and how could the discs be corroded??? it is used a lot and done 10k miles since then.

I asked what the remaining ml is and the original thickness and they do not match.
They actually are:
14ml original - 5ml left (9ml used) - Which is 57.1% worn
and 12ml original - 3ml left (9ml used) - Which is 75% worn

I queried the surface corrosion and pitting as the car is regularly used and nothing was mentioned on the service 7 months ago and all was good, I was told.

They sent through the attached pics and said if I do not pay £1100 to replace them or my warranty will become invalid... and I need to sign a doc to say I am invalidating my warranty...!

Can anyone advise what they think to the attached pics? is it that bad? are they trying to make a quick £1k from me?

Please help

Bren

Hi

I'm no expert but I don't believe brake pads / discs are covered by warranty ( classed as a consumable )
So if they wont replace them under warranty how can they say warranty is invalidated if not replaced ?
Ask them to clarify where in the warranty it stipulates this

If this is a main dealer and it proves to be false then it is very worrying ..

Many thanks for replying, I agree and still awaiting a reply to my emails/call(s).
Annoying also that I paid for every type of extra cover, including MOT parts cover (1st MOT will be DEC2019)

Frustrating as I have said I will pay for the pads but do not see how/why the discs are dangerously corroded and so quickly. You are right they have said it's wear and tear and they will not cover under warranty.

Hoping someone will advise from the forum if the photo's of the discs I uploaded look worrying, normal or dangerous.

The next option is to get the AA/RAC in with an inspector or take the car to another dealership for a second opinion.

A Pangea Green New Defender 110 First Edition is now sitting on my drive alongside British Racing Green Electric Mini Cooper SE Level 3. After 21 years in my hands my TDI300 90 was handed on to the next custodian on 15 July 2022.

Thanks, I;ve sent the pics off to an inspector who is taking a look.
If the discs are not bad or in needing urgent attention I will get the pads done.
Worrying they can corrode so quickly when used frequently!

To maintain a warranty you do not need the dealer to do the work, you just need to purchase Landover approved parts.

Lots of places sell the pads, disks and wear sensors and any garage/mechanic can change them easily.

And modern brakes wear quicker than older cars used to as many of the substances in old brakes are banned

Hi I have just had the same issue reported to me after 30k, car went in for an engine fault and the mechanic sent a video showing corrosion on rear of front discs and suggested replacement?
Did you have any feedback on your brakes or did you have to replace them yourself?

Thanks.

are you 100% sure those are pictures of your discs ?

LR have a nasty tendency to always say that brakes are worn and need urgent replacement as its cheap work to them that they can charge high to the customer.

IIRC EVERY time ive had cars in for work at 3 different LR main dealers they have said brakes need replacing after the complimentary check. And yet ive had them checked elsewhere at a trusted indy who said they were fine and driven for a good few thousand miles afterwards on them with no issues.

As has been said already, refusing to get the work done by a LR dealer does not by law invalidate your warranty, so long as you use original or better parts at a VAT registered workshop. Don't sign anything and get the brakes independently checked to confirm.

Thanks for the feed back, no luck whatsoever with the dealership quoted 600 notes for replacement!
Have booked in with local independent LR specialist, 380 and warranty in tact.
