RE: Car & Driver: 2014 Evoque review

And according to ''What Car'' latest magazine test comparison - 2014 Evoque SD4 9-Speed Auto vs Volvo XC60 vs BMW X3
regarding the Evoques 9 speed Auto, it seems it is still suffering from that junction lag.

Quote from the mag....."The Range Rover is quieter around town and has an equally muscular mid-range,but it switches up and down it's nine ratios regularly, and not necessarily when you want it to. There's also often a lengthy pause between you pressing the accelerator pedal and the Evoque responding, which isn't ideal when pulling out of junctions."

I'm sure someone here with a 2014 had said he felt they had solved this issue...hmmm, i think i'll reserve judgement till i test drive one myself.

I really don't think you can have economy and a auto box with out junction lag
My past cars
Vauxhall 2.2 auto dreadfully dangerous at junctions.
Bmw 530 auto 6 speed turbo disappointment at junctions
Bmw 135i twin turbo still a bit of junction lag then took of like a rocket...
The best auto I have driven was a jeep 4 ltr 3 speed auto no lag there... Foot down of u went..
That's why Manuel's are best for driving experience.
In my opinion.

From the article it appears also that they had the paddle shift in D mode inhibited if the car wouldn't engage lower gears in D

A Pangea Green New Defender 110 First Edition is now sitting on my drive alongside British Racing Green Electric Mini Cooper SE Level 3. After 21 years in my hands my TDI300 90 was handed on to the next custodian on 15 July 2022.

You can select in the menu if you want the paddles to work in D&S or just in S!

Maybe they should have asked someone who knew!!

As much as I'm an advocate of the Manual myself, You can have Turbo lag in a Manual just as much as an Auto...

The difference can be that it takes a bit of time to increase revs (which spins the turbo up), let the clutch up and engage drive giving the turbo time to wind up before you pull away, whereas on an Auto you expect it there the moment you press the loud pedal from idle which when driving away from a standstill can feel like an eternity.

If you're quick with the manual you can also get this pull away lag, just like the Auto.

The only way to reduce Turbo Lag is to motorise the Turbo Spindle (Like in F1 this year, but they don't generally stop at many junctions!)

But agreed the Manual driving experience is great Smile
