RE: Achieved 42 mpg!

Well done, but driving the length of the UK at 40mph is not an attractive proposiion! I can get 42+mpg at 70mph on a long drive on the motorway, it's all down to gentle throttle actions, remaining in 6th gear and driving downhill with the wind behind you.
Using the cruise control isn't a good economy device either, it's not as sensitive as your right foot and is really only a comfort device rather than an economy device!

A Pangea Green New Defender 110 First Edition is now sitting on my drive alongside British Racing Green Electric Mini Cooper SE Level 3. After 21 years in my hands my TDI300 90 was handed on to the next custodian on 15 July 2022.

RE: Achieved 42 mpg!

I have found that at cruising speed (any really, 60, 70, 80 wherever I am) if I ease back with a trailing throttle, I can see the instant mpg reading going up steadily, but maintain average speed.

Also, agree about cruise control - I only use if I have a tired leg after a long drive, or at roadworks with speed cameras (always some somewhere!).
It is designed to maintain speed, so up and down hills it will increase throttle accordingly, using more fuel.

You're not trying... Laughing I've had it rise upto 47mpg on the M6 going south at constant 55mph in traffic, was doing brilliant until I hit an incline and the M6 Toll then it dropped to 42 in moments.

The only way to seemingly get well into the 40's is to be at constant "slow" speeds.

M6/m42/M40 in the variable speed limit is a good place to save fuel and feel smug at all the folks that don't understand how average speed cams work and rush between the cams and stand on the brakes as the approach the next SPECS overhead gantry

I'm lucky to be able to drive at 40 mph in London already!Crying my mpg usually sits around 33 if I drive really carefully, otherwise it'll be 21 in stop start traffic.

Indeed! I left London years ago, can't stand the mayhem now, Traffic, Congestion charge, Speed limits, Speed cameras, Parking nightmares.

For a car that was launched as a new force in the city, it's not really an ideal economically viable choice for the city!

RE: Achieved 42 mpg!

Funguf, it would be interesting to hear if you have issues with your DPF with so much low speed city driving. Yours must go through a lot more cleaning cycles than, for example, my own car that only goes near a town centre (and then a market town rather than a "big smoke" city) once or twice a month and when I drive locally it is on 15-30 mile long trips at national speed limits on fast country roads.
