Also don't forget that even if you don't use your Evqoue to stray off the Tarmac the engines are quite modified by Land Rover to suit conditions like driving across 45 degree side slopes and wading in 1m of water that the Mondeo etc were never thought to need mods for. LR also remaps the engine ECU to suit power and torque requirements off-road as well as on road and it is possible that those mods cannot be made to other ford/BMW/PSA engines without compromising the engine life. Defender has a modified Transit 2.4litre 4 cylinder engine - it started out as a 2.4 but the final 3 years of production it was down to 2.2ltr (I believe it was sleeved down rather than a whole new design) to make the engine comply with the Euro5 emissions requirements. It also significantly reduced the VED on them from around £500 pa down to £270'ish.

That's all great. But we're still buying a Range Rover with a 2.0 diesel. I know some will defend it to the hilt as this is a forum. I purchased one so I guilty of falling into the trap. Low tax is good, but just wish it was a bit more refined. I'd happily have it step up into the next tax bracket. Truth is I hate a 4cyl engine.

Shame they can't make a 6 cyl to give the silky smoothness with the economy of a 4cyl.

Steve.

After owning a 2016 Evoque for six months I have to say the new 2.0 litre Diesel engine is a disaster. It's underpowered only returns 42 mpg and drinks 2 litres of adBlue per 1000 miles! This is a car engine and clearly not suited to a 4x4, the 2.2 was a far better engine but unfortunately the emissions regs killed it off. As for landrovers fuel / adBlue consumption numbers.....they must be dreaming!!!

My advise to anyone in the market for an Evoque is to look for a late low mile 2.2. You can be the one passing the 2.0 models on the hills then!

Yosser, that's interesting. I wonder if others feel the same. Let's hope they bring out a v6 like they rumour.

I hear there is a 245bhp Diesel engine around the corner? Not sure if it's 4 or 6 cylinder but supposed to be a twin turbo?

2017 Range Rover Sport 2.0 litre 245hp 369lb ft 0-60 8.0 secs 128mph according to Car Magazine 4 cyl £59,700
I'll stick to my 2.2 SD4 I think with the same 0-60

I like my PSA Peugeot & Ford DW12 derived 2.2L SD4 diesel engine. Lots of torque, been reliable, and sounds pretty good too.
