Lost remote key

I saw our local Timpsons saying Electronic car key replacement, but do they program them up to match the car though, I thought that was authorized dealer only?

With the Clio, they scanned the spare in a special machine, programmed a special chip which was then inserted into a new key and then the car was put into 'learn' mode to recognise the new key. All in about 30 mins.

Good old scam is this with the modern key fobs. An easy way for dealers of all makes to put on their Mr D Turpin masks!
Programming is a few minutes on a diagnostic machine & the rest is probably about £30 in real terms.

Just curious if you broke down and bough the KeyFob on EBay. If so, how did it work out? Another question for the forum - Can you reprogram the KeyFOB's by yourself, or does it HAVE to be done at the dealership?

Unfortunately I've lost one of my smart keys. Having spent a week looking for it I don't think I'm going to find it so need to get another one. The prices I've been quoted for the smart key and key blade are:
1. £325 from my local dealer (inc £72 to programme the smart key)
2. £214 from Duckworth's plus the above £72 to programme the smart key
3. £300 from Timpsons
4. £150 from an Auto Locksmiths
5. or I could buy a remote on eBay for circa £50 plus the blade for circa £10 and then get a Land Rover dealer to programme it.
I'd welcome any advice or input on the above options. Has anyone any used any of the last 2 options? Is anyone aware of fake or non genuine fobs being available. Are the margins on these so great that some places can sell them at half the cost of others?
For security, if I went with either of the last 2 options I would use a relatives address so that they don't know where my Evoque "lives".

Because of the excess levels on both car and household policies it's not a viable option, but thanks for the thought.
