90,000 and counting

90,000 and counting

According to the BBC news this morning JLR Halewood has been so successful with the Evoque that the factory starts 24/7 , 3 shifts a day working shortly............... and production to date (or the date of the press release!) has been 90,000 RRE's. By my iPhone calculator that means some 18,000 have made it onto the UK roads out of the production run so far (mine was built on 16th Aug last year so basically that is 12 months production) - how come they are still a rare sight on UK roads if so many have been made for the home market? Tata must be extremely pleased with all their investment at Halewood

A Pangea Green New Defender 110 First Edition is now sitting on my drive alongside British Racing Green Electric Mini Cooper SE Level 3. After 21 years in my hands my TDI300 90 was handed on to the next custodian on 15 July 2022.

From the Latest VIN numbers (thanks Jai) they have actually 100000 units produced in total (including the pre production models etc)

JLR sold about 38,000 LRs in the UK in 2011. It'll be interesting to see the figures for 2012; how many of these Evoques will be new sales and how much cannibalisation of FL2 and RRS sales there will have been.

It's only my opinion, but in this area of Scotland I doubt LR has lost too many Freelander2 sales to Evoques, a lot of farmers around here run Freely2 as a family car that can double as a farm hack, with either a Defender or a D3 Commercial as as their working vehicle, many also having an RRS as the good car - RRE just doesn't fit into real rural ruffty tuffty farm life. Defender has made a huge come-back with the farmers in this area in recent years and there are now lot's and lots of them around, some really ancient and some the latest 2.2 TDCi's, but they are suddenly a lot more popular than they used to be. It could be that parts and repairs are cheaper than the Japanese equivalents or maybe that, with the proper tyres on them, they really are better at hauling big trailers full of cattle to market than a cheap Mtisubishi/ Toybota pick-up

Yes, I know a couple of farmers round my way who have moved to Defenders from their previous Japanese workhorses, mostly due to the Jap cars becoming less utilitarian, i.e. more expensive and less rugged with more plastic trim etc - farmers really aren't that interested in being forced to pay for climate control and 6-speaker CD players as standard in a car that's going to have a wet sheepdog sat in the cab. Just hope that LR doesn't make that same mistake with the DC100 like I think it did a bit with the Disco 3 - it's a great car but not a true like-for-like replacement for the Series II Disco, probably the favourite LR I've ever owned as it struck the right balance between the bashability of a Defender and the comforts of a road-car.

Yup literally just saw that on the 1pm news! 24/7 shifts will hopefully mean I get mine on time for the end of nov! Wishful thinking!!

Yeah, I'm now wondering whether the build dates we've been given have already taken this into account as JLR obviously knew this was coming, or whether we'll suddenly see them moved forward. Like you, here's hoping!

They are a bit like Rocking Horse Sh*t, I drive from Newcastle to Derby and back yesterday and only saw 3 on the road ....

I drive from Newcastle to Seaham every day (approx 20 miles) and I see an average of 4 each way every day! (which may be the same 4 to be fair)!
