I would have thought so, I am driving a passatt hire car at the min and it can be turned off all together. To be honest the kind of driving i do it hardly ever engages anyway

Yes it can be disabled just like the freelander 2, there is a small button on the dash that says Eco just press it. Job done

excuse my ignornace, does the stop start function work like other makes, so cuts out when idling, stopped etc ? And does it also apply in auto boxes ?

It isn't available (yet) in a Land/Range Rover with an auto box
