50 + MPG - speary - 05-07-2013 08:11am

I saw an average of 51mpg on my SD4 this morning. Is this a record for an SD4 manual?. Bromley Cross to Manchester 18 miles, very light traffic. The average for the trip finished at 49. On the same trip going home at 17:45 ish I get about 37 mpg
By the way, my trip to work is down hill Smile
General average for the week is 38.5 on Shell Vpower Diesel

Your average is really good, but I'm not sure an 18 mile trip is the best indicator of a true mpg reading, nevertheless always nice to see a high figure Smile

Coast in Neutral downhill with engine off you'll get infinite mpg! Laughing

Just don't expect to be able to stop at the bottom Shocked

But then you could coast downhill with the engine idling and stop start switched off and still be able to stop...

That would use more fuel as the engine needs fuel to tick over. Leave in a highish gear going down hill with the throttle closed and it will use no fuel

The 18 miles consists of 3 mi A roads, quiet, 8 mi Motorway, flowing upto 60mph, 5 mi A roads moderate stop start, 2 mi city, heavy stop start, and an overall elevation drop of 600 feet
Same trip home but much more traffic and stop start, plus those 600 feet to climb back up
Every so often the "to work" mpg drops to about 35 average, which I think is when the DPF regeneration is taking place. Only happens once every couple of months or so

Well I wish I could anything close to 51 mpg over a route like that particularly from a cold start. part of my commute involved a 20 mile initial leg of similarly gentle driving and best I would ever see would be 34/35 mpg. What am I doing wrong?

Longish trip 130km's (~80miles) each way - managed 5.7l/100km (49.5mpg) on the way there and 6.5l/100km (43.5mpg) on the way back. Very happy with that. Last few tanks I've averaged 7l/100km (40mpg)

Pushing mine quite hard at the weekend, fully loaded, lot of Motorway and A road overtaking and stuck in glorious M25 Traffic and worse A road off the M25 (Stop start didn't work once), still got 35.8 mpg. Warmer temps and building mileage seems to be bringing mpg up at last, wouldn't expect to get 32mpg for that journey a while ago!

I know that some folks think the IAM is a load of b0!!0cks BUT, if you drive to the Roacraft system and plan well ahead you will get better economy, and less wear and tear on your car. Example, recently 2 police class 1 drivers took part in a Lands End to John O'Groats and back eco challenge. Most people did the usual coasting, high gear as soon as possible, drive slow stuff. The cops drove to the System at the speed limit and won. enough said
