If one really wants to lower the car the coilovers is the preferred way to do it. I lowered my Audi S5 (car is sold now) with high quality coilovers from Stasis (Ohlin dampeners) and enjoyed over 55K miles on them. At that time I was getting a bit tired of the stiffer ride. The look was awesome (spacers were added too) but for a daily rig and an annual mileage of $18K+ it was not pleasant any longer. I decided not to ever mod my daily car like that; a weekend worrier would be great thou.
