What average MPG are you getting from your SD4? - gomark - 21-09-2011 08:33pm

To those lucky enough to already have their ride Wink

We all know that published combined mpg figures are rarely on the money.

What is the average mpg that you are achieving in the real world?

Mid to low 30's - relatively short trips at present and engine still 'tight'.

Now have 1400 miles on mine. The shortest trip I do normally is 16 miles and get mid 30's up to 38 if I'm very careful. The motorway runs over the last 2 days, 200 nonstop miles yesterday and 242 today at trip computer trip ave speed of 68 got me 40.7mpg and today with TC ave trip speed 70mph the ave cons on the TC was exactly 40mpg. Influencing factors- I do not drive like the devil is on my tail, I have a very light foot and I don't do full throttle sudden acceleration if I can avoid it. I had a 4.2litre TVR years ago and got boy racing out of my system then. On a long trip I prefer the stress free drive at or very near to the speed limit - ie boring fart driving, doing a 400 mile drive at 90mph is no pleasure to me these days. I do enjoy driving fast but UK motorways in middle England are not the best places to do it. I am also a fully paid up member of the Hypermiling club. I also use the cruise control most of the time so I could possibly get even better mpg if I didn't use it

Should we not have a poll for manual and one for auto?

I have always been told that using cruise control saves fuelConfused You learn something every day

Cruise doesn't react as quickly or smoothly as a well trained right foot!

try "pulse and gliding". See Wiki under advanced techniques or just google it.

It would be good to have an option "Don't have an SD4" because we can't see the results until we vote.

To me braking is the anti-Christ, to be avoided if at all possible, especially on the motorway and fast A roads, very time you use the brakes you waste fuel, I wouldn't recommend "coasting" in an automatic though. IIRC SAAB used to make cars with a gearbox that would coast on the over-run and another car maker ( possibly Subaru but I'm not sure) has recently added a similar system to their cars.
