Diesel ban - phase out by 20xx - FL22EV - 26-07-2017 09:52am We hear a lot about the evil of diesel these days - NOX, particulates, soot etc. I STILL don't know for sure whether my (2016MY) Evoque 2.0 diesel is considered cleaner than older diesels, or than today's petrol engines... After all, diesel produces less CO2, and, with DPF, ad-blue etc, surely it's as clean as you can get? Is my Evoque likely to fall foul of pending legislation, and is it cosidered too dirty to (eg) be driven into some of our major (UK) cities? RE: Diesel ban - phase out by 20xx - PhilSkill - 26-07-2017 11:24am Firstly as yet there are still no bans so yes you can take it into Cities today. Yours is CAT 6, and if they ban them then they might as well ban 96% of cars period. By 2040 it'll be a different story, much more electric, and HUGE Power stations and infrastructure to generate all this extra Electricity, imagine the power draw as everyone returns home from work and plugs in their Cars! They'll need to fire-up the Diesel generators to provide the capacity to cover the power surge! Unless of course you use the new Diesel trains... RE: Diesel ban - phase out by 20xx - XFullFatTim - 26-07-2017 02:17pm I've just heard Mr Gove being interviewed on R4 World at One and he stated that what the situation is that there will be no NEW diesel or petrol vehicles on sale after 2050, there will still be existing vehicles but I expect the VED on them will be very high. There must be some monster electric motors in the pipeline to replace all those bus and lorry engines......... RE: Diesel ban - phase out by 20xx - Pete - 26-07-2017 03:27pm It's going to be fun converting the entire rail network to electric as well.... And who's paying for this lot? RE: Diesel ban - phase out by 20xx - PhilSkill - 26-07-2017 05:06pm Nah they just scrap plans to electrify trains, much easier to hit the motorist... No doubt Car tax will rocket to pay for all that infrastructure for charging points! RE: Diesel ban - phase out by 20xx - Andy131 - 26-07-2017 06:11pm Reminds me of 10 years ago working in South Africa. The new government came in and decided that everyone should be able to have/use electricity, which was a laudable idea. So it was made available to all, without sufficiently upgrading the distribution system, the result was rolling blackouts. Think about it our house has been upgraded to a 100A supply, we have 3 cars, each would require a 32Amp socket, put them all on charge and there isn't enough capacity to boil a kettle. We live in a 1920s estate where most houses have at least two cars, and many have more, your talking about doubling the supply. Now if we could all charge after we went to bed (remember economy 7) it would even out the supply that is currently under-utilised at night. RE: Diesel ban - phase out by 20xx - PhilSkill - 27-07-2017 09:46am Our company employs 500+ people, there is no tenable Public transport, so how do we all get to work... let see... yes we drive. Now we are putting in 8 charging points, but we don't have the guaranteed capacity for 8 cars, so when we considered the option to manage the charging currents when the capacity is at max, the installing company said we don't like limiting charging, as if someone gets in and there is not enough current to charge the cars before needing it again, they risk being left stranded. How would we install 500 charging points...? There's a lot to be solved before 2040 is a reality... |
