Yes I doubt you'd damage the car you would just blow the charger, The Evoque may well cut as would give protection to phones etc but I don't know, but also it may just look like it's cut because all the current is going to start the engine.

Only problem is cjfp, how will you know the charger is not working? the diode will likely fail eventually if not immediately.

I got a £15 one from Maplin ad I can reportthat after 7 days in a cold wet Manchester car park all was well!
