Why on earth do Apple have to make these updates a separate download for each piece of kit of their's that you own.............. iPhone and 2 x iPads to update uses up a lot of monthly download allowance

Tim,
There are different builds of iOS for different devices, so the iPhone version is different from the iPad one. However, assuming both your iPads are the same version then yes, it is a pain that you have to download it twice (unless you're happy to do a bit of manual stuff through iTunes).

Just tried updating my iphone but got an error message. Now all I see is the pic on the screen asking me to connect the usb to itunes. Done that and nothing happenned as computer wont even recognise my iphone......not going well at mo

First thing to try is a PC reboot, if that doesn't work then try putting your phone into DFU mode. I won't go through the details here as you're better off using one of the many good guides on how to do this that Google will bring up.

Connect to iTunes and then you will see your iphone icon on the left hand side, click on that icon and then select restore this will then back up your iPhonel and restore your iPhone to the latest factory settings iOS 6.

Is your iPhone ordered from Apple or your Network service provider?
If you have ordered yours from the Apple store, then the iPhone will be unlocked but will not have the new 'Nano' sim card type included (which is basically the micro sim type chopped and reduced in thickness by 15%) so this will have to be ordered from your N.S.P.

done the update successfully but now I have an unopened email showing in my inbox that isn't actually there! Just trying a reboot of the phone as the email isn't showing when I use the Mac or iPad to access my email......... I am now also on Facewhateverit is but not Facebook!
EDIT - Reboot has removed the non-existant email!

Hi, phoned apple up and tried a phone reboot but still no luck. After that tried it on 3 different pc's at work and the final one has worked, though I need to reregister the phone which I can't do as our wifi is thru a proxy server, and I can only put the proxy server settings into the phone after the phone is registered and up and running.....so hopefully when I get home I'll be up and running again....
I hope this was all worth it, I've still got another iphone, 2 ipads and 2 touches to do as well(as my wife and kids wont do it).
I'm hoping this will cure my sync problems as none of my devices will sync with iphot since I last upgraded the software, and apple haven't found a solution yet
