24 Hour Production

On the news this morning that Halewood has started 24 hour working. They've recruited another 1000 people, coming at a time though when night shift working has been shown to cause health problems.

An interview with the Operations Director focussed long on how well the company is doing and how hard everyone has worked but he wouldn't be drawn on the challenges of moving to round the clock working. It means that anyone's Evoque will likely to be worked on during a night shift which may have consequences for product quality.

Good news for JLR but they had better have something in the pipeline to keep the plant busy once demand for the Evoque slackens as it inevitably will at some point.

Two stats: Halewood employment has tripled in the last three years and 90,000 Evoques produced so far.

Just heard that on the news too - but did it say 'has started' or 'is starting'? i.e. are they just starting to recruit for it? Isn't it any time now that they actually shut everything down for 2 weeks holiday anyway (which seems an odd thing to do when they're switching to 24hr production to meet demand)?

IIRC LR started recruiting for the 3rd shift back in the spring and has been training staff since then for this 3rd shift - they also got something like 10,000 applicants for those 1000 jobs. The other thing is that it cannot just be LR at Halewood who have had to gear up for this, all the on site suppliers and the logitics teams must have had to recruit and train so they can supply the production line 24/7, so all round a good news story for Merseyside!

But much more importantly, good news for my build date (hopefully) Very Happy

Just hope quality doesn't suffer with night shift teams - although hopefully improves delivery times as mine is still December at the moment.;-(

Is this 24h production already factored in, in the estimated delivery dates for customers which orderd in the last couple of weeks, or will the planed build date be 50% earlier? Smile

I would guess they will have estimated the production increase, but depending how well it goes they may come thorough quicker than the estimations, so hopefully delivery times will reduce (ultimately they will want to sell as many Evoques as possible as quickly as possible)

You are right, ey will have estimated this factor, but if you have a close look on estimated delivery times, they are nearly the same, as those delievery times 2 month ago, I still got an estimated waiting time of 5-6 month, also many others do.

When I got my build date from my dealer about 10 days ago, he told me that LR had given them the dates but told them to expect the dates to come forward, so I guess for now they're just erring on the side of caution by not fully factoring in the increase in case something goes wrong!
