paddle shifters Q

i accidentaly hit my paddle shifters while backing up, so it shifted to 1st gear. i tried upshifting the paddles but the computer only allows to 2nd gear ( i was expecting that as with other cars you just upshift until it goes back to "D"). so i had to stop, shift to N and back to D.

am i missing something????? how do i go back to D (auto) after using the paddles?
