Tyre Wear

I took my Evoque to the Dealership yesterday for its 12 month service.

I had noticed the front tread was wearing quicker than the back and I asked the service centre to rotate the tyres. Anyway when I went to collect the car, the rotation hadn't been done as the front tyres have less than 1mm thread left. The service included a wheel alignment check which the tyres passed, so no problem there.

The car has done less than 25 000km and when I queried the rapid tread loss I was told that because the Continental Cross Contact has a softer compound this is the norm. I was told that driving style will also shorten the life of the tyres - my wife uses the car during the week (8km round trip to work) and I use it on the weekends (my 7 & 8 sons are normally in the car).

I previously owned a Freelander 2 and I was getting around 45 000km on a set of front tyres, so I can't understand the dramtic difference (Freelander had 18 inch Continentals as opposed to the current 19 inch)

Has anybody else had a similar experience?

PS I paid nearly $700 for the service and when I went to collect the car in the afternoon (16h15), the car hadn't even been washed. At least Austral Landrover's (only landrover dealership in Brisbane) level of service is consistant - consistantly bad. However, I must commend and thank Warren Mann for coming to the rescue again and sorting out the oversight.

RE: Tyre Wear

Spif888, have you been conscious of keeping your tyre pressures up to standard? This is MOST important to getting good wear from your tyres.

I have the 20'' Continental Cross Contacts, and have religiously kept my tyre pressures up to maximum standard.... i have covered close to 20000kms,and am booked to take my Evoque in for it's first yearly service in about a week's time.
I also intend to get them to do a direct tyre position swap of fronts to backs (in order to help share the overall workout), as it's common knowledge that the fronts will always wear faster due to their far greater workload ...steering,engine weight, driving style etc etc.

Now, i've just gone outside to accurately measure my tread depth, and here are my results after 20000 kms...

Fronts - 5mm / Fronts outer side 4mm
Rear - 6mm

These results are impressing me so far,and the swap will help bring them together over the next 20000kms. Calculating by the wear so far, i expect them both to come together and average out at 3mm tread depth by 40000kms.
The starting tread depth from new is about 8mm, and if it's as i expect 3mm at 40000 kms, then these Conti's should last for at least 50000kms, but should reach 55000kms i'd say from here. This is a good result, but i must continue to be conscious of maintaining good tyre pressures.

Benzina

The tyre wear is only on the outside. The centre and inside have at least 4mm.

With regards to tyre pressure, I generally check the pressure every 4 weeks. On my monthly checks the pressure has normally dropped by 2/3 psi but never more. If this slight pressure loss affects the life of the tyre so dramatically, I guess I will increase the frequency of my tyre pressure checks. Lesson learnt (albeit, an expensive one)

Coincidently, I keep the front tyres at 36psi and the back at 32psi. When I relayed this info to the service centre agent on Friday, he said the psi should be 2 above the recommended pressure.

RE: Tyre Wear

Ah o.k just the outside fronts is low then. Mmmm....and your tyre pressures have been o.k and should'nt have effected them that much, but i agree with them suggesting putting 2psi above the recommendation.
If the centre and inside of the front tyre are at least 4mm, then thats going o.k for 25000kms worth of wear. If it's just the outside thats balding, then maybe a second opinion alignment check from good specialist tyre centre would be the go, and at the same time, you could get them to do the front to back swap too.
Just a note and perhaps theory, i have observed when comparing the 19" vs 20" in the Continental Cross Contacts, that the 19's have a rounded shoulder mold, where compared to the 20'' which are very square in profile shape. The round shoulders and higher profile of the 19'' would show more outside wear due to the more flex and lean, particularly if maybe the miss's is hitting the corners and brakes hard.
Your rear tyres will give you a good indication of the average wear for these tyres.

For the record,i keep 38psi all round.

RE: Tyre Wear

Like Benzina, I have around 38 psi all round. Mine are not showing any abnormal wear with 20,000 kms. At the very first courteous check (5,000 km) I did get the dealer to do a wheel alignment as mine was out slightly
