Tire alternatives for 19 Inch rims

Hi,

On a recent off road trip, I badly damaged my one rear tire, such that it now has a mushroom plug, but not going to last long. Total kms to date 13000 kms; going off road once a month. The car is really used to it's limits
I'm therefore forced to at least replace two tires. I am considering replacing all 4, but have found that the tire size is a real odd size and only Continental (current tires) and I think Pirelli makes the size of 235/55R19.
I also found out that 255/50R19 would also fit (anybody done that?). I'm preferably looking for a more off road tire than the current 50%onroad-50%offroad split than the Continental CrossContacts.

Any suggestions for 19inch options?

Suggestions for other rims/tires is also welcome - something that would look good with the Evoque however

Just to put it a bit different; I basically have 3 options:
1. Replace the two rear Continental CrossContact 235/55R19 tires. In the long-term this forces me to stay with the OEM rims/tires.
2. Replace all 4 tires with a more offroad type tire of size 235/55R19 or 255/50R19, if any such tires exists. Any suggestions?
3. Replace all 4 tires and rims with a rim/tire size that lead itself more to offroad applications and is more generally available than the OEM tires. Any suggestions?

I vote #3 your not limited as you are now. You might get more brands when you change the rim size. Not sure if they would require XL load rating

Re option #2: I found the following tires in the 255/50-R19 Size:
General Grabber UHP
Achilles Dessert Hawk UHP
Achilles Dessert Hawk H/T

All of which looks much better than the Crapinental CrossContacts that's already worn at 13000kms!!

if you're really looking for a 50:50 on/off-road tire, and you really wanna stick to those 19" rims, than there is imho only one valid option (without further (massive) changes to the car):

General Grabber AT/HTP in 255/50 R 19.

I've got that tire in 255/55 R 18 on the car (plus wheelspacers front 20mm/rear 25mm).
It does a good (although not a fantastic) job offroad, and (maybee important only for germany) has a speedindex of "H", means i can do up to 210km/h on the autobahn...

Problem that I also found out yesterday is that they don't stock those General grabbers here in South Africa, must be something only for Europe

Tell me, the spacers, is that because of the increases width and not to touch the body when turning or something?

Also, how is the on-road driving noise compared with your OEM ones?

Also, no stone chips on side due to tires standing out a bit?

i'm pretty sure that you can find some tire dealer / offroad-parts importer who can organise those rubbers for you in SA.
eventually you've got to get in contact with some "hard-core-defender-off-road" part supplier. they surely get stuff send down there weekly/monthly from up here in europe. no probs for them to put 4 more tires into a seacontainer.

they send europewide, maybe they'll do SA on request.

i put the spacers on mine primarily for the look.
even without them the tires shouldn't rub while turning full lock (just abbout).
if you do lot's of gravel roads and are affraid of stone chips leave them out!!!
or get those big, ugly looking aftermarket mud flapps

i don't mind a bit of dirt splatter across the side of the car, at least it looks like it's been driven offroad on a daily basis

Noise ist noticable louder arround 60 km/h than stock, although not annoying for my ears.
they do a sort of snivel/hum you may know from "propper" ATs (eg BFG) or MTs, but it's not as loud as these are...

Ok, i have so far confirmed that Continental in SA (that imports General), does not bring that 19 inch Grabber AT/HTP into the country. They will also not bring it in on request.
I have contacted the guys that you referred to, and they are willing to ship here. Will get a final price from them. I'm just not sure what the insurance implications is on using tyres here that is not generally distributed, or approved for use here.

Other alternatives that I have been looking at is the Grabber UHP, although not nearly as nice as AT/HTP...but it is available here in the size. Reviews on the net also does not seem to be good on the UHP.

Did those 18inch rims come standard with your Evoque or are they LR2 rims? I don't see them being sold here either

FYI they dont sell that size in the US either
