The budget and the Evoque

What an absolute pile of shi@e. Absolute poison.

This boils my blood, making out that we are all rich, with ostentatious 20" wheels, whereas the poor "working class" people who drive a 12k car would likely need a loan as they are so impoverished.

Not only is it insulting the Evoque owners it is extremely patronising for the people who drive less expensive vehicles.

There are many people on this site who are just regular people with regular jobs, who have probably had to cut back on other things to be able to afford an Evoque, safe in the knowledge that we are helping the UK economy and creating jobs in the UK.

I hold down 2 jobs and have worked my backside off for 18 years to be in a position to afford my Evoque ( and yes I needed a loan to pay for it) this car is my reward to myself for working hard and providing my family with the sort of lifestyle we could have only dreamed of 10 years ago when we were living in a council house (not disrespect intended to council. I am by no means rich, I live in a standard suburban semi, and don't earn enough to be in the 40% tax bracket, but am I now meant to feel guilty because I drive a nice car?

Also, the tax that I pay and is paid by the employees of my company (income tax, NI EE, NI ER, VAT, corporation tax etc....) is a phenomenal amount of money and I sleep at night knowing that not only am I ok financially, but I am more than doing my bit to help those less fortunate than myself.

Worst of all it is highly likely that the reporter, editor etc involved in the story will be earning far more that the average wage of a Halewood worker.

Sometimes you cant a do right for doing wrong!!

Rant over, now off to work to earn enough money for this months loan payment!

Sensationalist tabloid drivel as usual, LR have had some Investment, used it to make a good product, It's selling really well, They need more staff, all good for the UK and Liverpool. There will always people who can afford or want a Range Rover or any other luxury car, and those that can't for many many reasons. The Budget wasn't pretty (and I'm not saying I think it was right) and seems pensioners have been hit worst, but the Economy isn't pretty and there are going to be a lot more pensioners in the coming years... How do we afford that... we need money coming into the UK, Rock on Land Rover.

The vehicle costs £28,000-45,000 depending on the size of the engine and the lavishness of the trimmings.

well, at least Tata decided not to take the Evoque production to India. Then, there will be 4,500 more people looking for jobs in the future!!!!

On the news this morning, JLR are in negotiations to have Jaguar / Range Rover built in China for the Chinese market. Thin end of the wedge I think, as this would open the door for mass production with cheaper overheads.

I don't see it as disparaging of the Evoque or Evoque owners at all. I just read it as the classic socialist "glass is always half empty" sort of claptrap.

Wherever the car buyers are, if there was no Evoque there'd be fewer jobs. I'm sure some of the beneficiaries of the Evoque's success are locals - I suspect there aren't too many Polish workers flying in each week to work at the plant. And if Vauxhall built a car people worldwide wanted, that plant wouldn't be at risk either. I drive an Evoque with a clear conscience - even though my one Evoque has had a minute impact on UK employment, I still view chosing an Evoque as being better for the UK than driving a German, Italian, French, Japanese (etc.) built car. I suppose I could have chosen an Astra - and the Gaurdian might look more positively on me for that - but then we're back to more socialist "everyone equal" claptrap.

If you had bought a 'new' Astra the headline could just as easily read 'only rich can afford NEW cars' it's a no win situation as far as the Guardian is concerned.

Firstly, welcome to the world of owning a car with the Range rover badge on the front and back - those of us who have owned them for a few years are used to having to hide them when a trade's man comes to quote for work. It's an automatic reaction that if you own a Range Rover you must be a millionaire, even if your Rangy is 40 years old you are still likely to suffer.


Secondly, for those worried about Chinese built JLR products coming to the UK, how many Chinese VW's, Audi's, Skodas, Seats, Fiats, Lancias, Citroen's, BMW's, Peugeots, Chryslers, Honda's, Toyotas and Vauxhall/Opel products are being imported into the UK? None, all those makers produce cars in China solely to meet demand in China and to get round truely huge import duties, why should JLR be any different.

What do you expect from the Guardian!
