Smartphone navigation on in-dash screen

Hi,

I mentioned in another post that I want to integrate a smartphone navigation as I could not justify to spend € 2500 for a pre-historic RR satnav. Here's a brief status update.

I finally received all the components:

Range Rover Evoque with Surround/Rearcamera (€ 58000)
Motorola Atrix with HDMI Interface (€ 290)
HDMI - Composite Converter (€ 35)
Cinch - Fakra adaptor (€ 10)
electronic video switcher cameras/Atrix (€ 60)
12 V converter, switch, cables (€ 30)

Installation is straightforward:

Remover center-console and CD-player. Disconnect Fakra-connector C23X/Y/Z (LH behind CD-player) and connect the wires to the video switcher. Wiring: video switcher - HDMI converter - HDMI interface.

You access the Android screen over the camera button in the menu. 12 V + on the switcher = Android, 0 V = surround cameras. The switchbutton will find a place in the triangular compartment. The Atrix turns into a touchpad when connected. If you want to use the touchscreen of the in-dash unit you will need the "customgadz" interface ("coming soon").

Still to do: definite wiring, remove housing from interface, construct a holder, find a good audio-solution.

First impression: Works. Needs some improvement in terms of video quality. Easy to handle (two fingers on the touchpad move the map) but small button too difficult to operate while driving.

BTW, best navigation software: Sygic

Interesting in the extreme!

My guess is this would work for the iPhone? Not bothered about touch screen interface but would like to see and iPhone navigation display on the RRE display.

Should work with any device that can deliver a composite video signal to a cinch plug. But the screen size/resolution has to be adapted as well. As far as I know there is a accessory available from Apple.

It's not just for navigation...

Very interested in this mod to finally hook up my i phone. Have you got more pics of the installation.

I'll post more when I finished the project. Electrics proved to be easy. A nice holder for the phone in the center console (above the cupholder) will be a challenge.

Does this replace the rear cam input then? I wonder if a switch could be used in someway to switch between.

Looks great! Would be good to use the TV input if possible so the cameras could be left as standard.

Thats what the electronic switch is for, its a kind of "video relay". With a small button I can toggle between "Android" and "normal camera view/surround menu". I could even connect it to the reverse indicator so it switches automatically to the cam when in reverse.

TV-in: Problem is the lack of the menu item.

Oh thats great. I will do this on mine just for movie viewing. On the US spec they dont give you duelview. I have a tosh thrive that could be a good candidate for this.
