Real world mpg

I've reached 10.43l/100km (27.24 MPG UK). SI4. Used alot the auto and always put in the highest possible gear... pretty good i think.

I did a 500 mile round trip from Sussex to Cheshire and back yesterday. Mainly motorway and I tried to keep to keep to the speed limit, or thereabouts, Averaged 58mph and fuel consumption 40.8mpg.
8000 in now so that was the best I have had so far.

If you averaged 68mph, you must have been cracking on a bit in parts, or there wasnt much traffic on the M6 which I find hard to believe

I suspect this is as good as I'm going get it for now...

SD4 auto, 3500 miles total at start

49.2 miles - from cold, 4 miles of city, the rest motorway, three traffic light stops, cruise set on motorway at 60mph and stayed on with only a couple of minor slow-downs, air con on all the way

Average 45.6mpg

Interestingly I filled up first and it said 458 miles to empty, but after 49 miles it says 428 miles to empty. Overall average for 3500-odd miles is 35.9 but with somewhat more lively driving for the most part.

That's not bad! I have only done 700 miles, but I got 42.4 mpg on the last 250 of that (all in one journey, mostly motorway but including 23 miles of traffic and 20 miles of country roads).

As regards range, the 'miles to empty' will adjust as you drive to whatever your current mpg is running at on the expectation that this is how the rest of the journey will be, so, at the start, it will have a different mpg to base the calculation on.

In summary then people (having scan read 60 plus pages) would it be fair to say that in mixed driving the SD4's are averaging high thirties and the SI4 high twenties i.e about 10Mpg difference?
I am about to choose which one I buy....

I'm pretty sure everyone's mpg who are driving diesels will be improving now that the weather is warming up.

200 miles mostly urban with a very small amount of motorway, the main journey has been a 30 mile round trip three times with a mix of driving although mostly urban. Current average is 33 mpg, which I think is not bad and expect it to improve, there has been quite q few very short trips too, but this is representative of what the car will be doing on a weekly basis, I expect it will probably creep up to an average of about 35 mpg with the type of journeys we do, very acceptable for this vehicle I think!

You're better off if you do longer journeys (not lots of short ones) and around 8000-10000 miles a year to warrant having a diesel due to higher running costs, DPF maintenance etc.

Goodness, you are piling on the miles. How many do you expect to do in a year?

I think high twenties for the Si4 demands a very light right foot and long periods of near constant moderate speeds. Open the taps on the motorway, drive on rural A/B roads or in town and the figure plummets. It all depends on what your style of driving is and the journeys you do, more so than in other cars in my experience. The embarrassment of being overtaken by everything on the road last weekend while trying to eek out the best mileage is not my style.

Keep in mind that even in these times of record fuel prices, depreciation will be the biggest cost of ownership and the Si4 will depreciate more to reflect the higher fuel costs. I haven't managed to put £100 worth in my Evoque yet but it's close...
