RE: Real world mpg

(16-12-2011 02:10pm)cobkelly Wrote:  SD4 Diesel manual.

Filled up yesterday with 49 litres after doing 355 miles since last refuel. Most of the mileage followed the same daily pattern of town driving for 5 miles @ 30/40mph, then dual carriageway for 7 or 8 miles @ 60/70mph, then town for a couple of miles @ sub 30mph. Then a return journey at the end of the day.

Getting out the calculator this seems in the region of just under 33mpg, which is disappointing considering I have the manual with start/stop and purposefully changed up the gears early. Anyway, not getting stressed about it and just accepting it for what it is - but would like to know why the official figures are so far out from reality.

To be honest for that kind of driving pattern 33mpg isn't bad going - top drawer fuel economy will only come from the engine being run at constant speed/load - i.e. cruising for an hour or more at a sensible speed on the motorway.

RE: Real world mpg

Drove from Southampton to Wilmslow on Thursday just over 250 miles. Average speed 55mph mixture of motorway and A roads. Mpg 40.8. I think that is pretty good.

And it was snowing hard in the Cotswolds. Switched to grass gravel snow - car didn't miss a beat when other cars were struggling. Great stuff LR. Felt really confident that I would not get stuck.

Arrived: SD4 Prestige Auto Coupe with Lux pack. Ipanema Sand with Black Panoramic Roof
Ambience Interior with Macassa wood.

Now a Jag XFR Kyanite Blue - wow what power.
At home and superb.

RE: Real world mpg

I am beginning to think the reality for my soon to arrive 2wd could be around 45mpg, it kind of looks like taking 10-15 off the official figures are the norm. That's pretty disappointing, when a friend of mine takes delivery of his sd and it doesn't even reach 40mpg he will be shocked and disappointed to say the least !

RE: Real world mpg

Will be very wary of information that LR provide in the future. Being a first-timer to the brand, can I ask if they usually 'massage' figures to the degree they have with the MPG?

RE: Real world mpg

I done a bit of an experiment this afternoon when we were out, as I have been lucky to get above 20 mpg since I got it.

I reset trip B as I pulled onto the A3 at Liphook, done a steady 60-70 all the way to Guildford, no harsh accelerating not going above 2000 revs and driving carefully. 14 miles, average speed 69 mph, 40.3 mpg.

I then reset the trip and drove as I normally would from Guildford the Weybridge. Travelling the same pace as the rest of the traffic, a bit overtaking and occasional blast. 10 miles, average speed 80mph, 31.2 mpg.

Reset again as I turned off the A3 and headed home through a bit of traffic and across town. 3.4 miles, average speed 23 mph, 22.3 mpg.

So if you drive carefully it can achieve decent mpg. However, ss soon as you go above 70 mph or push the engine above 2000 revs then the fuel economy is massively reduced. And its just a bit crap in/around town!

I understand why I generally have mpg in the low 20's now as I drive mostly around town and when I am on a duel carriageway/motorway I tend to make bursts above 70 to overtake.

I am no longer going to track the mpg on the trip and just enjoy the car Smile I am certainly not going to drive that conservatively ever again just so I can get 40 mpg. Think I will have to accept that my average will be lucky to get over 30mpg and I will be filling it up a bit more often that I was anticipating as I do a lot of town driving and like to put my foot down occasionally !
