Hopefully there are some tuning options available. I am new to the LR brand so I'm still learning, but can you tell me if these engines are being used in other LR models? If so, perhaps there are already tuning solutions available.

My preference would be for a tune utilising the OBII as this would make it easy to revert back to stock. I am not a fan of piggybacks unless they are highly advanced and designed for the engine, and not a one-chip-fits-all solution.

Hopefully this would result in improved fuel economy (when not utilising the extra power!).

Also, can someone confirm what the differences are between the TD4 and SD4? Are the engines identical or are there slightly different parts being used? If it's the same the TD4 could easily be tuned to SD4 numbers. Given the price difference in Australia, it would make more sense to go for the SD4 and have peace of mind for warranty though.

I hope so but it doubt there is much they can do. It seems common for car companies to exaggerate numbers, however this is not even close!

Tuning the evoque is not straightforward, simply due to the type of ecu fitted to it (i.e. the Bosch MED-17). This particular unit has an anti-tune function, and can only be tuned on the bench. This means only a professional shop can do it. So far haven't seen any piggyback which could overide this anti- tune function.

However those which had been tuned on the bench, had an approx 30% increase in power/torque.

It bases the calculation on your current driving style. I chauffeur one of my customers in his Porsche Cayenne sometimes. The car is a 4.8-V8 & if you floor it you can see the range drop which is obviously telling you that you are using more fuel driving in this manor so calculates the range left accordinly!

Yes I did think this would be the case & diesels are better if you do longer drives. I did also think that one could go for the diesel & when the 300BHP comes out then get that if it was a sensible price that is as I would also assume they will have an exhaust note to match the performance (hopefully).

Thanks for the explanation. Looks like some tuning options are going to take some time.

Are you saying a more powerful Evoque may come out in the future? Is there anymore info on this? I am really interested if there is

There has been a lot of press and rumours that LR are considering a sportier petrol version using the 300bhp engine version used in the Focus ST.

I have been told on pretty good authority - New Range Rover Sport in late 2013 with an "RS" model in line up. 300ish BHP Evoque too. No exact date for it but I would suspect the RS RRS will emerge first & the Evoque very close behind or at the same time.
New Big Range Rover around October 2012, Discovery 2014 & Defender 2015.

Thanks for the info guys. End of 2013 is too far away and that would most likely extend to early 2014 in Australia. It's probably best to get an Evoque now and trade-in when the time comes, if there are good deals.

I really like the direction LR are taking, I think a performance orientated Evoque will be a huge success.

Second tank of diesel - the predicted range ... 407 miles!

The car's mpg calculation for this tank stands at 31, compared to the 43.5 claimed by LR.

Which is down from 445 miles on the first - maybe its the way I drive.

Si4 update - 50km run to home last night 9.7l/100km (29mpg). Same run to office this AM 9.0l/100km (31.4mpg). The 50km about 60% motorway and 40% urban.

I seem to be getting the hang of getting a little more mpg out of this thing - still not LR's claimed figures but getting to within 10% of the claimed combined cycle.

From the initial report, 300bhp comes from the current Si4 (albeit a higher pressured turbo). This would mean tuning by aftermarket tuners would reap similar figures. Most stock engines (from experience with Mitsubishi Evos, Subaru STis, Nissan Silvias) can output upto 350bhp reliably. This is done by bolt-on items and an ECU retune to make higher boost (typically abt 1bar). It would be interesting to see what mechanical changes will be made to this higher performance Evoque, cos if its just a retune, the 'lower performance' Evoques would still be able to replicate it through the aftermarket route.
