However having been on the recieving end of incomplete developement of new technology a few times with LR products I would prefer that the product developers get it 100% right and working as anticipated before they put it into customers' cars. I am tired of having to return to the dealership for endless software updates to cure glitches on products that haven't had proper developement. I appreciate that there are some things that, no matter how much in house secret testing the car makers do, will only become an issue once a couple of hundred thousand owners have driven a lot of miles in their cars, but today's hitech electronics like in car apps don't need that sort of "in service" testing.
Tim, I agree that "in service testing" is not the right way to go. Personally, it is annoying to me too, since a trip to the shop is at least a half day (100 mile round trip). It is what it is, and no one made me purchase an Evoque.
That being said, this is a different category of car for me. I could have gone the safe, albeit boring, route, i.e. Honda, Toyota (although that is becoming less so), but I've always wanted a British car, so with my eyes wide open, I went for it. I know about the reliability, but I've also noticed that most of the posts on this blog regarding problems seem to originate in the UK. I do wonder if perhaps the units which are built for export to the US might have to undergo a more robust final inspection. I don't know. Maybe, two updates aside, I'm lucky (touch wood). Heading south again in a few weeks for first (six mo.) service, which is offered gratis by our dealer (Still get the complimentary 1 year service. I feel fortunate that our local dealer JR/LR of Seattle, seems on top of things, and will call from time to time just to see how things are going. I like that.
I like having a unique car that everyone asks about. My FJ Cruiser (Toyota-still don't know why you don't get them) was such a car when I first got it. Now it's ubiquitous. I'll spot maybe 10 a day. I don't see that happening with the Evoque.
Also, I can't ignore the fact that while it does take my time away to have to go down to the dealer, I do get to go for a drive, and that, I am still enjoying immensely. Good luck with your Evoque, and happy motoring. Cheers.
