My first modification....fix car mat issue (Australian based)

I was disappointed with the size of the mat, so I did my first (very small) modification yesterday. Because of the design of the footrest I don’t used it and therefore my left foot rests between the brake and foot rest. I wanted a mat that would go right up under the pedals to protect the carpet.

I went to Supercheap Auto with my drivers mat in hand to match the width. I found a black mat that closely matched the colour of the existing mats. Incidentally it was one of the cheapest sets at $32.

Below is a picture of the mat I bought against the existing Evoque Mat. These were taken with the iphone so some dont resemble the true colours too well.

The mat fits almost perfectly. The mat extends right under the pedal, far enough that the edge of the mat is fully away from the pedals. The edge of the mat goes up to the steering rack. I understand the whole liability thing with mats and pedals, but comfortable with the set up. The mat can not get stuck under the pedal , but what it does, is prevent the accelerator from being fully depressed, albeit only slightly. I do not have an issue with that either as I never floor my cars.

So I made a couple of X cuts where the mat hocks are located. See below

The existing Evoque mat can now be fitted over the top. Fortunately the Evoque mat fit into the hocks as well so there in not chance of the mat slipping and causing a issue.

Overall very happy. I think the colour matches pretty well and now when I rest my left foot it will be on the mat and not wearing the carpet.

Good job, i do think its ridiculous the mats don't extend under the pedals. Also to worry about is that footrest, I'm thinking about a glue-on rubber pad.

Evoque was great, now in an RRS SVR

The mat thing is due to global homologation rules coming from the US. Due to the runaway Toyota issue which was in some part caused by feet getting caught in the longer mats, however more due to stupidity but you can't discriminate sales on this basis unfortunately

Excellent idea!

So good I just copied it with a little modification, the set of mats were £7 and I used one of the rear ones to cover the foot rest. I just cut the corner off a rear one and sewed it in three places to the main mat.

SiT, just go to the local auto shop with existing mat in hand to compare colours. The shop I went to allowed me to take the mat to the car before buying to check sizing.
