RE: Just had the scariest experience of my life!!!

As it's done it again, definitely get it looked at.

You'll see from my thread, it cost me £300, with £170ish of that for the sensor. Done by a specialist rather than a dealer.

Mine's at 32000miles, but I've heard of it in the first few thousand too.

Mine has got What's left of the Original Manufacturer's Warranty, Plus 3-Years of Approved LR Warranty, so Hope something like this would be Covered, So having Read loads on here since I picked-Up the Pure Tech at the End Of April, I hope to have a Bit of a Heads-up if things go Wrong & be covered for most things....!!!

RE: Just had the scariest experience of my life!!!

sadly my car has no warranty left so I'm having to pay out of my own pocket.

I called up LR today and the earliest they can take a look is July14th and at a diagnostic cost of around £120 to fault find.

Its booked in at a local (non LR) garage tomorrow as i daren't risk damaging it further by driving it.
This garage seems reputable and they have the computer kit to diagnose the DPF and check its functioning correctly or if its a sensor fault.

I already called LR parts today to obtain a quote for a new sensor in anticipation that it would be the sensor which has failed. This will cost £180.

fingers crossed its nothing too catastrophic to fix.

That all sounds spot on Samanthacb, i'm sure it'll be sorted and running fine in no time. My dealer had little interest either.. but then at their prices I had little interest in them really!

Be interested at the price yours comes in at, mine was £300 all told.

RE: Just had the scariest experience of my life!!!

Anyone know the root cause of the problem? Is it just a crappy part, or frequency of short journeys. I've done 23k in a 2013 and never even had a sniff of regeneration as I do a good mixture of longish and short distances? Is it the case that the more times it does a regeneration then the more likely the dpf pressure sensor is likely to fail?

I guess for anyone looking to buy second hand it's something that needs to be taken into consideration. Is it a common problem with other dpf models or one tied to JLR?

RE: Just had the scariest experience of my life!!!

I had the sensor burn out repeatedly after the 9 speed gearbox software upgrade in late 2014, led to LR withdrawing the software upgrade while they investigated but I never kept the car long enough after 2 scary incidents and 3 sensor replacements to find out what the final result of the corrective treatment was or if the software "upgrade" was ever re-introduced in an updated form. I know of several Jeep owners with the same 9 speed ZF unit who have had similar problems with PDF sensors since their cars were serviced and the software update was installed. Like Goodshot I have never knowingly had a forced DPF regeneration on any of the 3 cars I have had with DPF's fitted as my normal driving is on fast roads with no very short journeys or commuting.

A Pangea Green New Defender 110 First Edition is now sitting on my drive alongside British Racing Green Electric Mini Cooper SE Level 3. After 21 years in my hands my TDI300 90 was handed on to the next custodian on 15 July 2022.

RE: Just had the scariest experience of my life!!!

Anyone here opted to actually remove their DPF completely?
I've found several places advertising this service and wondered if it is something to maybe consider?

They list the benefits of 'upto 20% more power', 'Better average fuel consumption', 'not a problem when testing MOT', 'No more failures', 'lets the engine breath more easily'.

I'd be interested to know more from someone who knows about this...

RE: Just had the scariest experience of my life!!!

" AA quote
We're seeing some evidence of DPF systems failing to regenerate even on cars used mainly on motorways.
On cars with a very high sixth gear the engine revs may be too low to generate sufficient exhaust temperature for regeneration. Occasional driving in a lower gear to maintain around 2,000rpm should be sufficient to burn off the soot in such cases (refer to the vehicle handbook).
DPF regeneration will be initiated by the ECU every 300 miles or so depending on vehicle use and will take 5 to 10 minutes to complete. You may notice other symptoms and a puff of blue smoke from the exhaust, similar to an engine burning oil, when the process is complete.
There's no evidence in AA breakdown data that the problem's going away – newer car models seem just as likely to suffer DPF problems if not driven 'correctly' as those built when DPF's were introduced."

The first time it happened to me was when the car was 1 month old after 2 hours at 70mph on cruise control, this is usually when it happens although for the first time last week it happened 10 miles from home on a roundabout.
With the 9 speed box the engine very rarely goes over 1500 revs for long so it seems that this is an ongoing problem and can only be covered by keeping the car under warranty

RE: Just had the scariest experience of my life!!!

That article is very interesting. In an auto you can always downshift a gear or two using the paddles to get the revs into the right rev band to trigger a regeneration. It is high time that the engineers in the motor industry developed a regeneration alarm system to warn you in sufficient time that you need to carry out a forced regeneration rather than the current system that in effect tells you that it is too late and you have to line the manufacturers pockets having the car taken into a service bay to have it cleaned and the system reset. This cannot be beyond the wit of man.
