RE: Is the Evoque a landmark vehicle. ?

Yes it is a land mark, maybe not in the big motoring word but for Land Rover certainly. It shows that they can get things right right from the outset, ground breaking design, luxury in a very sall car and SUV in miniature. BMW tried with the X1 and failed because they were not prepared to break the corporate mould, tried to keep the cost down and ended up with a freak. LR was prepared to think outside the box for the Evoque and dared to be different which for a company with a hugely conservative customer base was a huge step in the dark for them, one of the smaller and very specialised car makers. Even though I don't like it, I think Audi as also be partly as successful with the Q3 at producing a mini luxury SUV, certainly they did a better job of the Q3 than BMW did of the X1

A Pangea Green New Defender 110 First Edition is now sitting on my drive alongside British Racing Green Electric Mini Cooper SE Level 3. After 21 years in my hands my TDI300 90 was handed on to the next custodian on 15 July 2022.

Its a new model of car, a nice one but just a new model car.

Certainly not a landmark, no more important than any other model of car recently launched.

The Evoque is a beautiful piece of design that has been perfectly (and bravely) migrated into a hugely successful production range.

It's a personal viewpoint but I think Audi did a similar thing when they launched the TT years ago. That too was a new innovative design outside of the manufacturers comfort zone in a competitive marketplace. It was an instant success primarily because of it's looks, proven technology and brand.

Technologically the Evoque isn't breaking any boundaries and wont be setting any new standards for manufacturers.

To answer to the question we need to agree on the definition of Landmark.

Is it a leap forward in visual design? Yes

Is it a leap forward in delivering new technology? No - IMHO they have missed a trick here unless they are saving it all for Evoque II

Will other manufacturers copy elements? Of course - they will be paying people lots of money to pinpoint the elements of the Evoque that have triggered the 'buy reflex' in us all. I think it's drop dead good looks will be near the top of the list though.

Will it set a new standard in it's (and other) marketplaces? Maybe (see previous point)

Finally Arrived 06/02/12 Very Happy :

Very good looking, with a nice interior ( I would have said excellent if it were not for some of the cheap plastics around the steering wheel) and will certainly have shaken the opposition. However, for it to be a game changer to me it would have to drive a little better, be a lot more economical and use some better materials in places where it's tried to save money.

That said, I washed her today and she looked great and made me feel very lucky. I'm pleased and as it stands struggle to see anything outside a FFRR that comes anywhere close to floating my boat.

+1
