In sport, which I prefer, ( but its the same in D ) I find that on take off the gearbox defaults to second gear, which is why I believe many people complain of slow initial take off, so, whenever I need to make a quicker getaway I always paddle it into first.
Plus one. Use them regularly on my daily 20 mile commute through Aberdeenshire B roads.

Arrived 16 December 2011: Prestige SD4 auto 5dr in OG with Adaptive Dynamics, Adaptive Xenons, Surround Cameras, Auto Dimming Rearview, Grey Oak Wood, Spare Wheel and Powered Tailgate.

Joining 2010 Freelander XS Td4e in Stornoway Grey (we like Grey!)

Bit off the topic but couldn't find it anywhere else. About the sport mode: when I picked up my car the dealer said that on a diesel engine the sport mode is actually quite useless for some strange reason that I could not quite fathom. Why is that, anyone?

Enjoying enormously: Pure Td4 Automatic, Firenze Red, almond/espresso interior, panorama roof with rails, Pure tech pack, clearview pack & cold weather pack, parking radars front and back + camera.

RE: Is Paddleshift Pointless?

Perhaps because you get maximum torque early as opposed to petrol engines. Petrol engine has to be kept in high revs to get maximum performance. But I don't think Sport is useless, because max torque comes early but not from the beginning. So higher revs are fine. Second thing, sport mode makes the car to stay in lower gear and does not downshift, etc.... So to wrap it, S is good with diesel as it is with petrol (but with petrol it is a little more desired function Smile )
