Considering an Evoque

Hi Folks

I've been a member over on RRSport forum since getting a Sport, but now my wife is badgering me about also getting an Evoque, so I hope someone can assist with some early questions to hopefully help me find what I'm (she's) after.

I would prefer 4WD, and I need a minimum of 1800kg tow capacity for the twin axle caravan (the Evoque would only tow the caravan very short distances so I'm not interested in the caravan clubs recommended 80% max etc. - I've the RRS for longer trips. I just want to be legal).

I have found some interesting Evoques on various dealer sites but many are saying 1500kg tow limit, a few say 1800kg. I also think I read the newer ones are 2000kg, but at the moment I'm considering 14MY Evoques. While it will be my wife's daily drive I am veering to the Dynamic, or maybe Pure Tech - she won't really use the dynamic mode, I just like the look.

So what dictates whether it is 1500kg or 1800kg? Engine size, 2WD or 4WD? Also I cannot find on dealer listings anything about whether they are 4WD or 2WD, is there any hints that lets me know, or as above is it the tow limit?

Can't find anything stating 1500kg but found a few saying 1800kg.

So it looks like most of the dealers have just taken a generic tech spec to add to their listings, although poor it's about what I'd expect from an LR dealer.

I've also found several 13MY's which look nice, they have the 6 speed gearbox so pre-facelift. But other than lower black plastic trim being smaller for 14MY on, I cannot see any other external changes to call it a facelift, is it only the gearbox? I've found both 13MY and 14MY brochures online but other than the differences from Pure, Dynamic and Autobiography I don't see differences on same spec levels.

Any hints on where I should be looking?

Also check the capacity of the towbar being fitted.
I recently fitted a Witter towbar, max limit 1800kg - which matches my capacity, but I am sure one of the towbars we were looking at had a capacity of only 1600kg.

Don't forget to check the nose weight capacity as well, LR are quite generous with 150kg, the towbar manufacturer might not be.

Thanks for that pointer, it would likely be easy to overlook when buying a towbar specific to a car you'd assume it was rated to it's capability.

Yes my caravan hitch is 100kg noseweight, but if I spend time on good load distribution I should never get too near this, I usually aim for about 75kg on the scales.

All these things are why I veered my wife away from the Evoque and to the RRS in the first place, but she still wants her Evoque...

And for my above post on the facelift, on further reading I'm thinking 14MY wasn't so much a facelift as an engine/gearbox update, and the facelift came in 16MY?

Mines a 64 plate and looks very similar to a 12 plate - but with the 9 speed gearbox.

We have 2 electric bikes that fit on a towball mounted bike carrier at 24kg each, plus the bike carrier, it's really easy to get close to the 150kg nose weight limit.

How do people with 4x4s with a nose weight limit of 60kg manage? - Thinking about it seriously, the majority of 4x4 rarely see mud, but they do get bought for towing - take a look at any touring caravan site.

Don't even think about lifting 24kg onto a roof mounted bike carrier, unless you are 6'6" and built like a brick outhouse.

The manual of my 2016 Evoque SE premium 5-door, says 3,500lbs (US Spec, 2.0T engine, ZF 9-speed tranny)
the 2016 Brochure (http://www.auto-brochures.com/makes/...voque_2016.pdf) says 3,968lbs (with a braked trailer) Max tongue weight- 331lbs
The 2017 Brochure (https://www.landroverusa.com/Images/...293-367695.pdf) says "up to 4,409 lbs" in the sales part of the brochure, and then in the specifications, says "3,968lbs".

I just hauled this RV, which was about 3,500lbs, 500 miles, across a hot 40C desert, then up to 8,000 feet, at over 100km/hr.
the Evoque did great.

So my wife got her Evoque, a firenze red Dynamic with black pack.

But now she's not allowing me to fit a towbar... apparently I'm to use the Sport only! The whole point in getting the Evoque was to replace our ageing RR for general running around, including short caravan trips to the beaches around where I live, but now her car is to stay all pristine and clean.
