Sound System Spec

I have been in the market for a second user Evoque (SE Dynamic L538 2017) for a while and just found one that I like the spec of - except for the sound system which it says in the advert is 80w. To try and find out if this is correct I asked for the VIN and got the info from Topix that it is a 'Base Sound System L1' which is still no help to me really.

Looking through the forum it seems as if there are only two Meridian possibilities 380w and 825w

Is the original advert a mis-print that should read 380w or were there some low power 80w systems fitted ?

380w is the base system, 825w the premium system and 1700w the millionaires option (the 1700w system was never offered in Evoque and at £4000 extra very few RRS or FFRR owner’s opted for it either). 825w is also 23 speakers and is an excellent system, i’ve Had it in my last 3 cars.

I can’t speak for for UK spec, but the Evoque is definitely made with a 80w unbranded system (non Meridian).

I’ve had a loan 2017 SE model that had that audio system that I didn’t like at all. Tinny, thin sound and 8 speakers. I wasn’t impressed. You can tell if it has that system as there is no branding on the speakers and no CD player in the dash.

I’ve got the 17 speaker 825w system in my car - it thumps and is awesome.

Often LR use Alpine systems for their unbranded audio - my apologies I didn’t realise that such a low output radio was sold in overseas markets. There was also a 180w system in some UK spec cars as standard in 2016/2017 models.
One way to try and see what was available for your market is to do a search in a search engine for you country and model year Land Rover configurator as somebody on RRSport recently found every model year configurator hiding in a dark corner of the internet through a search engine.

Although I am in Portugal the car is coming from Germany. Assuming the worst and that it really does have a 'tinny' 80w system ...

Do I need a complete after market refit or is the head unit universal and I need to just change speakers and add an amp and sub woofer to get the spec closer to a 380w Meridian system?

Has anyone else done this ?

whilst i haven't futzed with my RRE sound system (love it as-is), i have futzed with lots of others (jeep, audi, honda) and it's rare that you can or will want to retain the factory head unit - or many of the other components.

The lowest Stereo offered now has only 8 speakers and is pretty poor sound, defo worth upgrading to the Meridian! Not sure how easy a retrofit this would be though as low end European models get a different screen unit.

A lot more questions and despite some quite detailed research and a lot of translation done there seems to be very little info out there as for sure some of the car audio specialists out there have done this job and had to find out ...

1) The head unit used for the 80w 8 speaker basic sound system is common to all specifications (80w/350w/825w) ?
2) Where the amp is actually located and whether it can be easily accessed and therefore changed ?
3) Whether the cable/fibre link exists in the loom to the under seat location of the sub woofer in the higher spec cars ?
4) Whether fitting just a 150w self powered sub woofer under the seat is straight forward and cost effective (Blaupunkt GTR 96A. £85 quid on Ebay) ?
5) If its possible to change the door speakers easily for an upgraded variant of better quality with integral woofer/mid/tweeter ?
6) Whether the loom is common to all models/specs and the cables are actually there for all options ?

Not sure of all the answers, but here are the ones I know...

1) Unsure of this one - I don't think so...at least not for the 825w...it has more speakers (centre channels)

2) In my MY14 Evoque (Australia) the Sub Amp is below the front passenger seat (LHS) and the Sub is in a special molded box under the drivers seat (RHS). Not sure if these are maintained or flipped in other markets.

3) It's a cable link to the sub amp, and I am pretty sure it is there for all models. Custom connector, but there are threads on this forum on how to tap into it to add an aftermarket amp. It's high power (not RCA level) so you will need an amp that takes these or a converter

4) Potentially, yes. If you could find one that fits where the original Sub Amp goes, it would be easily powered / easily hooked up. The fitment area for the actual Sub is less accomodating (shape-wise) so I doubt it on that side...

5) Unsure - haven't had my doors off - as I have the Meridian speakers which go alright.

6) I believe so, but that might not help. It would depend on the answer to question 1, as even if the physical cables are there, the sub channel might not be getting any signal...
