9 speed ZF auto for 2014

ECU = Electronic/Engine Control Unit, both will do fine! but not all ECU's control Engines!

The Jaguar XF 2.2d & 3.0d are completely different cars in performance (gear change wise) and they are supplied with the same gearbox.

The main difference being the 3.0 litre is a good unit and the 2.2 is average.

Increasing the number of gear ratios from six to nine gives significant improvement in fuel economy and a corresponding reduction in CO2 emissions.

Smaller ratio steps give improved response during acceleration, improved gear change quality, drive and refinement.

The higher top gear not only reduces fuel consumption but the lower engine revs improve comfort and reduce noise when cruising at high speed..

Cutter 7, do you sell gearboxes for a living? Seriously though if a higher top gear ratio is used when will the car ever get into it, a 70 mph cruise will probably equate to about 1,250 revs which is a speed at which i don't believe the engine will be comfortable. The changes might equate to 4 mpg on the official test so I can't see the point in trading to the new model and taking a hit on the existing car just to get a 9 speed gearbox. The cost to change will probably fund the marginal extra fuel consumption for 20 years.

The 9HP transmission is far more advanced than the six-speed it's replacing. The current transmission makes downshifts sequentially, while the new one has a skip-shift function for better performance. There's also a "Fast-Off" mode that measures the rate of throttle release, anticipates further requests for high power, then holds the gear if necessary. So you won't need the "Sport" mode setting anymore.

The lowest ratio in the 9HP is lower than the existing six-speed, which is great for off-road use or towing, while the higher top gear improves efficiency and reduces noise when cruising. Despite the extra three gear ratios, it is only 0.24 inches longer and actually weighs 16.5 lbs less than the outgoing box, thanks to a new vane-type pump, two dog clutches and a nested gear set, designed for transverse applications.

Cutter7 you must definitely being working for ZF.: So the improvement is that I won't have to use the 'sport' setting and will maybe get a 4mpg reduction in fuel consumption. How will the engine be able to cope with lower revs at 70mph, it will need much more torque than it has at present so perhaps that's what the new engines will provide. I fail to see any benefit from this gearbox for the everyday Evoque driver, after all it isn't a sports car its a heavy SUV.

It sounds as if I won't have to keep using the paddle shift to change to D1 setting all the time in nose to tail rush hour traffic....or when I set off in the morning down my steep gradient private road (which almost warrants HDC). When I then reach my first A road I'm also constantly having to change up with the paddle shift from D4 or 5 to D6. So ZF box for Evoque looks good to me! Either that or the new RRS late 2013.

Most of the buses at work use ZF units, very reliable smooth shifts and return good fuel economy.

Only 1,900 rpm approx, is needed to cruise at speeds of around 70-80 mph compared to 2,600 rpm in a 6-speed transmission..

Sixth gear on the auto gives near enough 37/38 mph per thousand revs so cruising at 74/76 mph is 2k revs not 2.6k, which would be more like 96mph.
