mobil1 or castro - donot521 - 04-09-2013 05:57am

Hi all
I am about to do my first oil change at 6 months (I know we can wait till 1 year to change, but I think is way too long) on the engine cap it recommends Castrol, However I've been using Mobil1 synthetic for all my previous cars and had no problem whatsoever.

My question is, do I really have to use Castrol? or I can use Mobil1?
has anybody used mobil1 for their evoque?

I can't remember this question ever being asked about the petrol model. I'm sure someone else can help

Check the recommended specs of the oil in the manual, if the Mobil matches the spec then it'll be fine.

IMHO unless you have done a high mileage in 6 months you are wasting your money and oil. Modern engineering and lubricants are more than capable of protecting you engine up to the recommended intervals and probably a lot further. My previous service interval was up to 20,000 miles and I never suffered any problems. In fact they got better as the mileage increased

This is a frequently asked question on all LR forums, especially from North American owners who don't trust LR to get their engine to 12 months/16000 miles without an oil change. The problem is that oil is just soooooooooo cheap in the USA and you can go to a specialist lube shop and they will even change the oil while you wait!

Donot, you can use any synthetic oil that complies with the spec LR has put in the owners manual, but honestly, your car really will go the distance without an oil change unless you are driving in the Arctic or the Desert or always crawling in stop start city traffic when you will find that LR does recommend more frequent changes.

I topped off with Mobil1 syn. I waited a year on my first oil change too because its a sealed unit motor if i remember correctly so harder environmental contaminant to get in. My max on synthetic oil is about 12,000

They also change the oil frequently in the USA because it is cheap basic oil that is used; not a decent synthetic, hence the need.

No doubt frequency of oil changes is more important than anything else. If you want to look after your engine, you are better off changing the oil more often than using any particular brand. Both are good but I have always been a fan of Mobil 1.
