No I have not tried it the other way it's a bit of a pain getting it into that postion cos of other family memember's cars on the drive, but it can be done, I will try it and let you know, I will have to check out too that the reverse angle keeps the water away from the pully. Will let you know.

After the rain earlier this week my car did this two days on the trot, definitely rain connected and it is definitely linked to the auxiliary belt and pulley system, five minutes and its gone, definitely not injector knock, it is a tensioner rattle and only after heavy rain.

Not worried Now i know what the link is

This is the reason I posted an additional thread on the subject hopefully to help others with this problem. (Incidentally the water filling up on the casting of the engine mount can clearly be seen on the previous thread video)

For the record, nose pointed down on a slight incline. Only ingress could have been from the scuttle as I have no vents.

Happens to my 5 door as well, but only after I have used a pressure washer. Too much water sprayed though the front grille.

I also park our 5 door nose down a slope. Only experienced this phenomenon once and it was first thing in the morning after torrential and driving rain. Definitely a water problem interfering with the belts and pulleys.

+1
5 door, doesn't do it every day, always on first start, parked sometimes on an incline, seems to coincide with rain (we get lots here) or after washing, and it certainly isn't a diesel rattle as the damn engine seems to be shaking itself to bits. Asked stealer and he told me that it was probably moisture/damp on the belt, I asked him why and he just said weather!!!
Thank god for this forum!
Please let me know if you come up with something positive identifying the problem and/or a fix, good luck.
BTW I asked an independent mechanic and he said it cant be good for the car long term!

Sorry to bring this post back from the dead but I recently dropped my 13 Evoque at the dealer for a similar start up noise. The called me about 2 hours ago and said that the Cam Gear came loose. Looks like they are going to have my truck for a week or more.

2ndChance - there is one difference between your car and all the others in the thread - you have the 2.0ltr Gasoline engine which should be turbine smooth and is the only engine available in the USA market....................... the rest of the cars mentioned are the 2,2ltr diesel engine which is very rattly when cold anyway.

Do you guys have an optional 2.0ltr Gas Engine ?

ps I can't wait till the diesel makes it over here.

Yes, but it is not widely purchased as we have been conditioned here to buy diesels for their better fuel economy even though they emit far more harmful particulates, hence the DPF (diesel particulate filter) as well as the cat's fitted we also can only run on ultra low sulpher diesel.
