I have always used Kerosene. I found that it works the best. Most of the tar removers have Kero as one of the ingredients. I usually give the area a quick polish after using the kero as well.

Pure TD4, Fiji, Auto, Pan Roof + Extras - Delivered Very Happy

I have always used a dab of petrol (unleaded of course - think of the environment!)
