Dipped My Center Console Moldings - Carbon Fiber Look - Marcpitch - 10-11-2014 08:44pm

I did my first Dip project, learning a little about dipping on this site and then carefully examining a lot of information and videos on the DYC site. As is the case with many of you, my two aluminum clad center console pieces are nicked and dented. This happens primarily because of the seatbelt buckle constantly hitting it when buckling in. I also have some scratches.

I thought about replacing these pieces but they are about $160 each and it was not worth it to me. Plus, the scratching and denting would happen again and again...

So, I thought this would be a great first dip project...I am thinking of a couple more on my 2012 Evoque.Overall, I am very happy with the way it turned out. My biggest disappointment is in how smooth it is....it is not as smooth as I would like....and somewhat gritty. I know what I did wrong....spraying too far away and not making the last couple of coats wet. Regardless, I like the results.

That actually looks really good to me mate. Well done!

Looks great.

Another option would be to have those pieces wrapped in CF. Haven't looked into it, but I think most companies could manage those curves.

Looks good. My wife drags her handbag across from the passenger seat and has dented and scratched mine. Might look into this for mine

It looks great!!! I love this invention lol! I am thinking of dipping my roof [emoji16] that will be my next project! Btw to make it smooth, i remember seeing a product that DYC.com sells to make the surface smooth. You can probably check out there website

This video shows how to do it, and it is fairly easy.

Thanks. I got everything here: http://www.dipyourcar.com

Home Depot and Lowes have the black and maybe a few more colors/enhancers, but you can't get most of what you need there. I got the template at Bed Bath and Beyond....shelf/drawer liner.

WOW! You mean to say that is plastidip??? I thought when you said dip, you meant hydrodipping. Looks fantastic. How did you get the carbon fiber effect? And doesn't the dip scratch easily? especially that peels off easily right?
