Bad Meridian Sound - evofan - 10-11-2011 03:13am

Wondering about the HighEnd-Classification of the Meridian System... The sound is really not like that.
So I want to modify the evo-meridian-system for better sound.

Does anybody know if a external soundprocessor could be inserted into the audioflow?
What kind of bussystem is used in the RRE?
Is it posible to code the soundsystem?

Maybe have it checked first. Although I do not claim to be an audio specialist I find the sound to be the best I have heard and from the comments here, that's seems to be the case for many here.
So you might want to have it checked before you modify it, only to find that something wasn't working properly.

Meridian is a quality sound !

I have listened to the meridia upgrade system as part of my test drive and was particularly impressed for a manufacturer supplied piece of kit, especially compared to my current system.

Now my current system is a 3 way active pioneer PRS system up front supported by a 10inch orion sub. So is not bad Wink

What type of problem are you encountering i.e. error in soundstage (too high, too low, drawn into the centre of the car rather than in front) or a problem in the quality of the sound i.e. too thin or too heavy on bass etc?

Don't forget to check the quality of the source you're using (bit of a noddy point, I know...)

Good point, if using an ipod or usb, sounds is always going to be poorer as source data has been compressed.

Try a good CD instead, I know its old school but is best source for music quality.

I would be surprised if the Meridian sound was poor given they produce very high end home cinema and general home audio amps etc.
I have the 14 speaker Dolby set-up in my FL2 and recon that is very good for a factory system and every salesman I have spoken to about the Meridian system and they say it will blow the Alpine away!!

Sorry, the Meridian System in the evo is definitely no HighEndSystem!
The sound is partially ok. But it is far away from good and neutral sounding systems. The label meridian is more a marketing-label than a quality warranty in this case. And the salesman will never attack the PR. Most of them are parrots and caught in their marketing strategies. Sorry, not all but a lot of them.

Back to the sound: The power and loudness of the system and the bass is ok but even mid to high frequencies are musty, unsophisticated and not clear. And the Evo-3band-Eq is not able to controll and change it in a effective and individual way.
All premium car soundsystems I know do it better. F.e. the B&O system in my Audi A5 sounds much better - it's a free and clear sound that is also better controllable.

Btw, I'm working as a sound-engineer for tv and film. Good sound is my job. That does not mean, that I'm too picky - the evo is no controll room. But I have to weigh good and bad sound - even for small or complicated room situations. So please trust my ratings.
This is no evo-bashing - it is a great car and I smile every day while driving it - but I like to have a better sound.

So - is anybody here, who knows about the audiobus-techniques in the Evoque and the possibility to change the soundprocessor-settings - or to insert a equalizer?

Have you got the 300 or 800 watt system?

RE: Bad Meridian Sound - Evoqess - 11-11-2011 06:27am

Well it sounds like you are an audiophile after a upgrade - fair enough and good luck. But believe me, the Meridian is a fine product for the Evoque and 99% of buyers will be impressed. As you are after an improvement may I suggest you take the word "bad" out of the title of this thread - its a bit negative and sensationalist. The base Meridian is actually better than the upgraded hifi on my recent Audi. I'm not a sound engineer but love music and can appreciate the differences between good and bad sound.
