I had the same thing on a RS Escort.

So why bother cutting holes in the bonnet (hood for our American friends) Question

Years ago they there called turbo vents. But now car makes just add them for show. But why add them aftermarket! For me, I like my cars to look different for any one else's. Hence I have all black lettering & spay work on my Evoque.
For some they like there cars "normal". But each to there own. As for cutting holes in the bonnet, these vents are LR parts, but made to fit without damaging the bonnet. So come resale time can be removed if needed.
So we may be playing around with are cars, but nothing that can't be put back to "normal" if needed Smile

I wasn't implying that people who stick vents on their 5 door should cut holes in the bonnet. I was asking, if the vents are only decorative on the coupe then why would land rover go to the trouble of cutting holes in the bonnet and therefore if they are performing a function then why does the 5 door not come with vetns as standard as well

Having looked at my bonnet there are holes in the bonnet, you can see the engine bay.
