So, tyre replaced, 245 45 R20 V103 Cross Contact, by Kwik-Fit mobile, £272 including fitting on my driveway and that's the best price I found. The technician did a good job fitting the tyre - the rim is fine - and after he reported the two fronts are nearly worn (the new tyre was a rear) I swapped front to back to eek out some more miles before the remaining 3 have to be replaced since the fronts wear more quickly than the rears.

I don't know what it is about these tyres which make them so expensive but it's about what I pay for a huge rear tyre on my 911. It does appear the larger diameter tyres are disproportionately expensive. Leaving aside the need to replace a tyre early, it looks like, for me, an expected life for a set is 25k miles. That's something like 4p a mile.

Edit: For comparison, my petrol Evoque does 28 mpg which is 20p a mile; annual servicing over, say 12000 miles, is about 3p a mile. Depreciation over 22000 miles/28 months has been £15000 (at least) or 67p a mile. Total, pretty much £1 a mile to run an Evoque.
